Average VFX Artist fee for ultra low budget short film

5 years, 1 month ago - Laurie Waplington

Making short film with an off-screen explosion halfway through story. On explosion, screen goes white and fades back into aftermath of dust-covered characters and rubble-strewn street.

The cast, script and locations are all incredible so I really don't want a tacky explosion making the whole thing look amateurish, however the total budget (assuming we don't get funding) is little over a grand (pound sterling).

I've worked with VFX artists before but only on mutual projects that don't involve payment. How much would I be expecting to pay a freelance VFX artist to create a nice explosion effect for a single shot?

I've done them in my past life as a VFX artist from about £500 upwards. Depends on the actual shot tbh.

Almost impossible to price up, "it depends" is going to be key. If you have shot the rubbled street practically in camera and all the artist needs to do is a flash to white it's clearly a world apart from if they need to model a street in 3D and animate everything.

This is a case where a picture may be worth a thousand words!

VFX budgeting needs a VFX producer to help you work out the prices. This what I used to do as part of the job...

There are so many variables to effectively work out an answer to this question. I did an explosion scene as part of an overall VFX package of effects for about $5,000 for a feature film. So it depends on the overall deal tbh... But I would say around the £300-£1,000 mark...
