INDEXBands, acting troops, and the old co-ops

I have been taking a brief look at the history of money and the arts, so I'm sure some of the academics on here will know more than I do.
But, it appears that there have been a few trends. In theatre, and in music, a lot of creative groups function like co-ops. From Shakespeare and Moliere down to our day, there has been some kind of profit-sharing agreement with at least some of the actors involved. It spurred some of the most creative writer-performers to do their best. This, however, seems to be disappearing, in both music and theatre.
Does anyone know of a successful co-op style film production company? Perhaps there were some among the French New Wave, with their small casts and crews.
What about unsuccessful ones?
If so, how did this affect the relationship between writers and actor, or writer and producer, or editor and crew and so on?
If you've stared a co-op, or have been a part of one, any tips?
