Best Camera head attachment for Stop Motion Animation and tripod

12 years, 3 months ago - Anastacia Tohill

I would appreciate any advice from anyone as to the best Camera Head attachment to use for precise smooth movement for stop motion animation, with marked movement. I have a 50D canon camera and Manfrotto Tripod. Also any advice for Tripods, whether booms are needed, equipment to get shots needed at close-up angles within a small set with 3 walls. Camera arms/sliders. I have a limited budget and just looking at possiblities as to what will be the best equipment to buy for a small set animation. Any links would be great, I live in the UK. Thanks very much for your help.

Use a remote control. There are lots of good heads out there, as that's a relatively light camera. The trick is to have a remote, so you don't have to touch the camera.

Setting up a rig really depends on your environment. My kids do animation of their Legos just on a cheap Velbon tripod, but the remote really helps.

Bigger concerns are lighting (which can change rapidly), focus (depth of field can be unpredictable sometimes, but that's related to lighting in a way), and other elements of the general environment. So, if possible, I'd get or make some kind of controllable lighting tent.

Best of luck.

Hi, thanks so much for your advice, I did not even think of wireless remote so just been looking online. I have been looking at manual pan and tilt precision heads like Manfrotto with marked degrees etc and fluid heads and ball heads. I only have a small budget so I think this is out of my price range. To have a camera head on the tripod which automatically via wireless pans, tilts would be amazing. I use Dragon stop motion software so can control settings of the camera with the software. Just trying to find ways of being able to get the camera right into the set and also being able to control the camera angles etc precisely. Thanks again for your help.
