Can anyone convert DV Cam, Beta Cam SP, and Umatic tapes to digital formats?

10 years, 1 month ago - Raza Mallal

Hi,

I have 1 DV Cam, 4 Beta Cam SP, and 4 Umatic tapes that I am looking to convert to digital format (either DVD or online). Would anyone be able to do this for me, or lend me a tape deck so I can convert them myself? I am based in Leeds and could either post the tapes or would be able to travel a short distance to use the tape deck.

Thanks,
Tina

Northern Visions in Belfast has all the formats you need but they're not a commercial setup so you have to be very cooperative when approaching them. Have a look at NVTV (www.nvtv.co.uk) and see if your material might be of interest to a community TV station in Belfast. Tell then you are willing to sit and do the transfers in Belfast yourself.

Try along around some of the edit facilities places in Manchester/Salford - or further afield in Soho. I doubt they see a lot of umatic any more (they were pretty much extinct by the end of the 80's), but you might find one who keeps a machine in case. Also look in tv-bay, maybe someone has an old deck for sale.

I have a handful of old Beta decks, can't remember if they're SP or SR, most likely SR I think, so may not be much help.

Gosh, remember how much of a pain tape was - when was the last time anyone you know had to think about gwnlocks? ;-)

Having been in operation for over thirty years we've kept at least one edit VCR from every era. Not sure the Sony 1" deck is fully functional but every format after that is represented somewhere around here. Those machines are like works of art to me, I keep them in tower racks; I think we'll get the whole bunch properly set up and connected with a computer so we can provide a historic formats conversion. Currently, apart for our own projects, It's too much of a palaver that's rarely worth the time and effort but perhaps it might be if we set up a permanent ready to use process. There are a few outfits in the UK who provide this service, to be commercially viable though it ought not be cheap.

Thank you all for your responses. I think I have found somewhere to convert them.
