Can anyone recommend a program that captures PC screenshots?

12 years, 6 months ago - Michael Chandler

I'm currently doing post on my new short, and need To add several screenshots - some close-up, some wider. I was going to use the screen-capture program Camtasia, but does anyone have any other recommendations?
Thanks

If you're capturing screen shots as a picture (not video), and you happen to be using Windows 7, that has the 'Snipping Tool' pre-loaded in 'Accessories' (or just search for "Snipping Tool"). It allows you to capture full screen or areas of it and save the result as a jpg, gif, png or html file.

As Omar Sattaur said, QuickTime on Mac works pretty well if you're looking to record the video. You can select a part of the screen or the whole screen, and the functionality comes included with most new Macs.

Windows also has a free video capture, although it captures in wmv format. I think the first thing to decide is what you're editing in and with. Camtasia is good if you're using Flash video.

assuming you have microsoft office installed use OneNote - it has an inbuilt screen grabber

Snapz is also a very good software and is only $69.00.

VLC media player might also be able to do what you need - I think you can isolate individual frames with it and can select many types of file to output to.

QuickTime Pro has a screen capturing feature on Mac. QT for Windows may have the same feature on the paid/pro version too. I've used the Mac version and thought it worked well.

Screen cap is built into PCs, it's a hangover from earlier versions of Windows. The Print Screen button on your keyboard takes a screen shot and copies it to the clipboard - then just paste into any program.

Could may be look at Microsoft Expression Encoder. There's a free version available to download from the MS Website. The free version allows you to capture chunks of video up to 10 minutes in length.

SnagIt is good. And I've always used the free version.

Thanks for all your responses so far. To clarify, it would be moving image not still, and I'm editing on FCP.
Will look into the suggestions you've all made, and happy to hear of any more.
