Hello everyone,

I have a MAC and I'm looking to capture a video from Youtube. Any programme recommendation? Free preferably....

Cheers

The beta version of MPEG Streamclip might do it.

Quicktime does it in Mac OSx. There's no need to install another program, as Quicktime records high quality screenshots, unless you want to do fancy things like zoom in to a portion of the screen. Then, there's Camtasia, for the fancy stuff.

I've used the Quicktime installed with Mac and it works perfectly.

http://www.downloadhelper.net is a free extension for Firefox. If you have the Firefox browser on your Mac, you can use this to download and convert videos.

QuickTime Player comes with Mac OS X, so it should be installed on your machine. If you go to File > New Screen Recording, you will be presented with the option to record the entire screen or a portion of it (by dragging across a section of the screen). This only works in newer versions of QuickTime Player (not QuickTime Player 7) and it's free, but it won't normally allow you to record DRM protected content (I think this depends in part on the version of QT Player and Mac OS X).

Of course, recording video files this way isn't ideal. If you are streaming and lose the connection, your recording is compromised and you must begin. I also dislike the fact that it's nearly impossible to screen record a movie flush to edge of the image or match the start and stop of the recording with the in and out points of the movie. Finally, if there are a number of movies to record, the process of screen recording can become tedious (as you manually start and stop each recording, watch to ensure smooth playback, etc.), so, depending on your requirements, it may be worth considering two apps that help you download the movie files themselves.

If you don't mind spending a bit of money, I'd really recommend Jacksta for Mac. You launch the app, then your web browser, and it detects and then downloads bits of video as you play them through your browser. Very handy for downloading from YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

Videobox is also a good little app, and is less expensive than Jacksta, but I've found the app sometimes fails to detect video files (particularly streams hosted using Brightcove) and download process is less seemless.

Hi Dennis and Tony,

Thanks for your answers.
The easy option of downloading is excluded, l've tried it many times with this video - it's protected by DRM and cannot be downloaded. That's why l think screen capturing softwares are best...
Tony, do you think the softwares you mentioned might work?

Cheers

There's another (free) Firefox extension called Easy You Tube Video Downloader 6.7

I'm on a Mac and it works fine. Don't know about your DRM issue but I've never had a problem. If you're unfamiliar with add-ons go to Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons
