Can anyone transfer footage on Mini DV tapes to SD card for me please?

10 years, 3 months ago - Christopher Cochrane

There are 4 tapes at an hour each so it won't take much time.

Ideally you should be based in the London, Surrey or Hampshire area.

In return I'll buy you some lunch and you would've made a new friend!

Best,
Chris

What's the footage of/about, and what format do you want it in?

As Claire says it will take four hours of real time play back plus any decoding for transfers, a few bits of kit involved so it's a bit of a palaver. You will need a computer with the software on it to achieve the transcoding. Any DV, DVCAM or HDV camcorder or VCR will play out the tapes via firewire. If the mini DV are actually recorded in DVCAM format then DV only payers/camcorders won't do; same applies to mini DV tapes recorded in HDV mode where only HDV players will do. There's no inherent tempermentality with DV between different machines other than the issues between the three mini DV formats and where a tape has been recorded in 'long play' mode which has been problematic when using a machine other than the one originally used, No cognoscent user however would normally use long play mode.

Hi Chris, I live in the Guildford area and I'm happy to do it for you, although you could be better off using the camera it was shot on to capture it. Mini DV can be quite temperamental. Mark.

Hi Chris,

Transferring Mini DV is in real time even via 1322 Firewire. We have a Mini DV deck. Is the footage on the tape MPEG2? Do you want it recovering to MEPG2 or to some other format?

Do you still have a mini DV camera? If you aren't fussy about the format you convert to, you can get USB digitisers for under £20.

Hi All

Thanks for your responses on this it has been much appreciated and helpful! Here's the background:

The current project I am filming at the moment is the music documentary The Other Side of Town www.othersidethemovie.com

I recently remembered that I shot some live jazz music performance footage on Mini DV tape in 2005, using a Panasonic Mini DV Camcorder, and thought it would be fun to revisit this and see if it can be fashioned into something for You Tube and promote it as vintage footage as part of the marketing for the film.

Now, I no longer have a Mini DV camcorder, or a Firewire. All I have is the tapes.

I assume the footage is in MPEG2 format, if not, then it would be whatever format would conventionally exist on a Mini DV tape circa 2002-2005.

Therefore I need someone who can transfer the footage on the tapes (via however means) to an external Hard Drive or SD card that I will supply.

PaddyClaire/Mark/John/Susi/Eric - Does this info help?

Yes, I agree with John. A bit of a palaver. Sounds more like a 6 hour job! I never use the camcorder for transfer - I have a Sd Sony deck and an HDV Sony deck and use them. I have also transferred using a Blackmagic H.264 recorder but had sound synch problems and haven't discovered why. I'm London but I suspect the opposite end from you as I'm Enfield.
