Coming out of hiding to share a recent short film

9 years, 7 months ago - Rudolf Kremers

Hey all. I've been lurking here for ages, but decided to become a bit more active on this forum. :-)

I've recently finished a short film, shot on vintage lenses which was a lot of fun, and it seems silly not to share it here.

Not sure what the right etiquette is for this forum, so please let me know if I should do more than just share the url?

Here is the vimeo link:

All feedback welcome, but keep in mind we shot it in a pretty humble manner. :-)

Hi Rudolf, watched the film, a few times, had to give a shout to someone who thinks enough about the look of their film to choose the lenses. Bravo, and it shows, many times over throughout the piece what quality lens have to offer, nicely done. As for the story, the depth of story was quite nice between the present and the recollections brought about by the neat game of clues the daughter had left behind for her dad. All a bit sad in the end for ol' dad, kind of wished he'd gotten a ticket for a ride on the ship, ah, the price of an emotional journey.

All the best,

Tom

Hey thanks so much Tom. :-) I tried to combat a lack of budget with strong locations and smart use of classic lenses. Glad that came across.

It's definitely a melancholic piece, but the ending is more positive than you may think :_D

Thanks again for the kind feedback!!

Among the many qualities your short has, I think topmost is the way you sustain the tone and rhythm throughout: no mean feat. I believe that aspect augurs well for your directing in the future.

Thanks for that :-D

I had to learn premiere to edit this film and rediscovered how much I enjoy editing. There were some pretty rough earlier cuts but eventually it just about came together, despite a frightening lack of coverage. The latter did harm the film but it could have been worse.

Thanks again for your kind words. :-)

Thanks again for the lovely feedback.

I was wondering if people could share their most effective strategies for gaining a maximum audience for one's short.

Any advice/tips welcome :-)

Dear Rudolf,

A beautiful, haunting and very moving film that resonated with me deeply. Watching it the second time around was even more satisfying. In fact, it took some time to respond as I had to digest the film and collect my thoughts before responding.

Thank you for sharing it with us.

I have a question about it but it's a bit of a spoiler to the plot so I will send you a message.

I don't know about maximizing an audience but I will tell you, as an avid festival goer, I will pick up flyers or cards about a film that looks interesting and then research it. In fact, one of the best shorts I ever watched was discovered during Raindance when I picked up a business card promoting a short that was being shown. I could not attend the screening but did watch it numerous times on Vimeo, and continue to follow it and the director.

Thank you for making 'Dear Joni', and best of luck to you.

Kindest regards,
Paulina Brahm

PS: The soundtrack is out of this world--no pun intended. Kudos to the composer.

Thanks for such lovely feedback! Sadly the film has been rejected by most festivals it has been submitted to, so I can't maximise on that kind of exposure yet.

In stead of giving up I should probably pick festivals that are more receptive to this kind of work.

I'm looking forward to your private message and hope I can answer any questions.

Thanks again!

Rudolf

You are welcome.

Private message to follow but I want to watch it again. That can only be a good thing....

But a quick note of encouragement, please don't give up, although it's not my place to say.

I may only be a humble actress (ie not a festival judge or critic or distributor) but I adore shorts and indies and I like to think I have some semblance of taste. And more importantly, 'Dear Joni' resonates in the human spirit (mine, anyway) and tells a story which can be interpreted by anyone in his or her own way, either from experience or from future experience.

Well, I submitted the film to Shooting People's film of the month, but it didn't get shortlisted.

Getting pretty fed up with failed submissions actually. :-(

Nonetheless I will charge right ahead and shoot a new film on Super 16. (I just bought a new camera) :_)

Good luck, Rudolf. Look forward to seeing your next work. Super 16 is beautiful. :)

Thank you!! Literally just now settled on the concept for the short and am writing the script. I'm pretty darn excited about it :-D

Well, I'm pretty chuffed to say that after I decided to start entering the film in more errr strategic festivals I am getting better result.

I just learned Dear Joni is an official selection at the Euro Fest in St. Petersburg. Hurrah!

As a bonus I learned that my SciFi romcom "Love! Rockets! Robots!" got accepted into the Stargate scifi film festival!:http://stargategalacticfest.com/

They are humble enough festivals but it is very nice regardless. :-)

Dear Rudolf,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! I feel so happy and thrilled for you!

This is really weird as I was just thinking about 'Dear Joni' the other day. The film has a very personal meaning for me and an anniversary date dealing with my own loss is coming up.

Warmest regards, cheers!
Paulina

Many thanks,

I started submitting the film again after your previous kind words and encouragement from other peers. :-)

My best wishes,

Rudolf
