INDEXDepression - do we want to talk about it?
7 years, 5 months ago - Karel Bata
Since Dan's passing I've been thinking about depression, and friends who have gone the same way, as I'm sure many others here have. But posting in the RIP thread seems a bit inappropriate. So maybe here..?
I could say more on this, but a quick couple of thoughts to kick it off:
We work in an industry that can easily make you feel like a failure. It's difficult to make your mark. It's often aggressive, competitive, judgemental, and full of people that just seem to BS the whole time. No wonder it can be a downer.
I think it's important to realise that feeling down is something chemical. You may feel worthless, but that doesn't mean you are. It's not a dose of reality creeping in, it's a chemical thing. Of course it can be triggered by circumstance, but it can help to realise that it can also be fixed. Do something else. See some friends. Or if it gets really bad find some meds that can lift you out of it. Or a combination. Some people are of course much more susceptible than others (while some lucky folks seem to never sink that low) and boy do I know I'm simplifying.
Now I wish Dan were here to comment...

There are so many things to say, so many directions to take that, but instead I'll ask a couple of questions, and hopefully the answers might be helpful.
1. Does anyone have coping strategies they'd like to share? Obviously, therapists and others might have advice, but the freelance worlds of arts and construction (which many film people work in) might have specific challenges (and specific solutions.)
2. Is there anything that can be done institutionally to make things easier for those with invisible disabilities? (not just depression, but anxiety, autism, learning disabilities and other things.) I mean, like the way they build ramps and have disabled parking spaces, understanding that a disability in one area does not hamper ability in other areas. Perhaps tips on setting up a workspace, on working procedures, positive feedback, and so on. (Perhaps tips on how to limit the judgemental, BS, and aggressive sounding communication mentioned above.)
I think there's the added challenge of stigma, which is why some people might not seek help or ask for the adjustments they need. If there's any way we can let people know that we understand that a disability doesn't make them seem less of a filmmaker or in any other way, so they let us know about their needs, that would be good to know too.

I don't think there's much education on psychology taught to most people and understanding the nature of being and what depression really is beyond feeling empty or feeling sad, people who suffer from depression are experiencing a very subjective view of reality and often can't see a more objective view of it, if anyone's feeling depressed or down or wants to understand more about it all I'd recommend watching Jordan Petersons lectures on Youtube about this, he's got 100s of lectures on psychology, a lot is taken from Jung and others but he condenses it in a digestible form and is great at communicating it -- he's got lectures superficially on depression and anxiety and a lot on the nature of being which is helpful for somebody with depression to learn about.
For some people talking about depression helps, for others it doesn't and Peterson has some reallllly good info on it without you needing to talk it out.

Just keep looking foward to your dream and f*ck all the people who try to bullsh*t you. Get motivated, meditate, socialize and have love around you. I think that if you isolate yourself and keep thinking that you're a failure, you will probably not be very happy..
Surround yourself with people who love you and hustle on your dream. Get ride of people who try to push you back.
Also, Tony Robbins helps! ahah
Success will come

Thanks for bringing this up Karel.
Depression for sure is part of so many lives, but it does also feel like it impacts a lot of people working in the creative industries. Wish Dan was here to add to these other helpful thoughts too.
