INDEXDo I have to pay the producer before my BFI application is successful?
4 years, 2 months ago - Buppha Wittaya-Amponpunt
I'm looking for a producer to team up with to apply for the BFI Network film fund. But the question is, do I have to pay the producer from the day he/she starts the application process? So, if my application is successful, then I will have to pay him from the day he/she starts the application process or only from the day the film production starts? What if my application is unsuccessful, do I still have to pay the producer for doing the application anyway?
I really appreciate any help. Thanks.

It depends what your agreement with the producer is and how much work is involved for the producer. Breaking down a script and creating an accurate budget can be really time-consuming for the "simplest" of projects and I can understand producers who wouldn't want to do it for free.
Some producers may prefer to take a percentage of any financing raised as their fee.
I suggest you sit down with your producer and discuss what is going to work and be reasonable for you both.

I don't mean someone should work for free either. I think people misunderstand that this is a collaboration work. I look for a producer to team up with for a passion project to, together, try to apply for the BFI fund. If the application is successful and we go ahead starting the filming. Then of course, the producer will be hired and get paid from the day we start.
But what if the application is unsuccessful, do I have to pay the producer anyway? We are teaming up to try to apply and see if we could get the fund or not. If not, then that's it. We will go our separate way. No one will have to pay for the other part. I don't get paid as a writer either if my application is unsuccessful.
So it's about finding a producer who likes my script and wants to team up with me to apply for the fund. So we are 50/50 on this. He/she doesn't have to pay me for writing the script, and I don't have to pay him/her as a producer either if our application is unsuccessful.

Is the producer doing any actual work towards the application? If yes, then he/she may ask for a fee for the work. But as has already been mentioned, it's really down to what you negotiate for the work.

What people seem not to understand is that I seek producer to team up with to apply for a BFI film fund together. It's a collaboration, not an employer hire an employee or a freelance type of thing. I just look for a producer who likes my script, and ten decide to team up with me to apply for a BFI film fund to produce the film together.

Then that's the opportunity you should offer, making clear that there is no fee upfront. If it's your gig, then it's your rules.

Buppha Hi
My view is get an experienced producer on board that has credits (checkable on imdb). Once they're attached, YOU do all the work. You are attaching their experience to show BFI you're in safe hands. It's up to you to get your baby off the ground. If you secure the funding, then the producer will start work.
Any decent producer worth their salt will NOT charge any fee upfront to attach ( I wouldn't ). They can take their fee out of the secured funding, assuming they actually do the work from then on. Good luck.

I have also emailed BFI myself, to see if they could connect me with some producers. I never get a response from them, though.

Buppha hi
Is this a feature or a short? If it's a feature, you can add me if all else fails. But if they require a full budget, you'll need to get a line or production manager to do that and probably pay them as they don't tend to do that on spec.
Cheers, Ivan
