Does anyone have any knowledge on jib and dolly system?

Hello

I am looking to buy a jib/dolly system. Can anyone recommend a value for money system?

My visual style is very much like the golden oldies.

I have rented dollies in the past and they are great but I think it’s time to invest in one now.
I have never used a jib but love the idea of having control of both height and tracking for continuous moving shot.
I have been researching the gear available on the market and it seems American products by Kessler might be the best for this? Kessler crane products are pricey!

Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

Cranes and jibs are expensive if you want them to be strong enough for older cameras, but miniaturisation means you might be able to get away far cheaper than you ever thought! If you need a high shot dropping to ground level then following a set of feet for instance, it suggests the shot doesn't contain critical dialogue, so see what you can get away with using a broomstick and a gopro. The setup time will be fractional compared with setting up a decent jib system.

Also, have a look on eBay - there are several home metal workers with good systems for lighter cameras at very modest prices. Or hire in a job and operator by the day, and get all those establishers in one go! Probably works out cheaper and easier!

The Brighton Film School has an Oxberry with a Worrell head for their Mitchell BNCR so it is the only place I know to learn the real classic craft. Ray Moore there knows it inside out. If you want similar, place an ad on bblist.co.uk and you are welcome to contact me direct at franz@imperialfilmproductions.com

I use a canon xha1 with a 35mm adapter so its quiet heavy around 4.5kg. I do have a Dslr but i'm really not a fan of Dslrs. I would only use it for B-roll coverage. Anyway I had a look on ebay and most of the jibs are from the usa. So I would have to pay around £110 for p%p.

I have found couple of uk sources that sell Kessler gear and hague gear. Franz I will have a research the oxberry and see what I find. I have been on bblist several times over the last two weeks but all the crane/jibs are very pricey I saw one going for £20,000 and its second hand.
thanks for the quick replies

Hi Shahid, I wrote the book (literally) on building your own equipment. People have used my systems successfully all over the world. If you want to try your hand at building your own stuff, you can check out the book at DVcameraRigs.com or take a look at the reviews on Amazon. The book is "Killer Camera Rigs That You Can Build" Good luck! Dan
