INDEXDoes anyone know of any woodland locations in the London area that don't charge filming fees?

Hello fellow shooters,
I am just wondering if anyone has done some filming in woods, forests or woodland areas in London and haven't required any permissions, permits or encountered filming costs?
Me and some filmmaker friends are looking to shoot an improv one-day short film for fun and using what we've got available - very low budget. I understand most places require a permit, and maybe only charge admin fees, but I haven't been able to find a suitable place in London that doesn't have a substantial hourly fee which for this project is unfeasible.
If anyone has any suggestions for me, I'd be very grateful!
Best,
Syd

I had this question myself last year about shooting in the woods in Manchester, after a bunch of phone calls and time wasting looking the area up online, I gave up trying to see if I the rights or not, basically, if you can walk through it publicly and it's out of the way, just go for it.

Hi I am 20-30 mins from Charing Cross, Victoria, Waterloo, London Bridge, Canon St. Near Orpington (zone 6 of London) in Kent. I have 7 acres of woods and 3 acres of garden. You can use my woods all day for £100. Obviously no electricity.

Here in Mid Wales there's no end of stunning natural locations that can be accessed freely that include vast open hillscapes, with or without water features, forests, river valleys, megalithic standing stones and even, if one knows where and how, ancient churches, monuments and buildings. Excellent B&B's available for as little as £20 per night or caravan and camping sites from as little as nothing.

What John said. Guys, there is way more to the world than london. In fact, if you are willing to venture to Wales, and want great outsdoors locations, with good mod cons - facilities to feed the army etc, take a look at
http://www.larp-candleston-campsite.co.uk/ - it's mainly used by LARPers but is also rented out as a unit, (their planning permission prevents them running it as a normal camp site, block bookings only) and if you want to make them an offer for weekends as yet unbooked, they are nice guys.

Hi Syd,
Jane seems to have an excellent answer for you and I would definitely recommend looking into it more.
As Marlom and John have mentioned Wales is fantastic, however, you have to look at the costs of getting your crew there.
The home counties could be an easier solution for you. I live in Surrey, just on the border of London (30 mins for Waterloo) and there is loads of green space and woodlands around here. No idea who owns it, but places like these will be far cheaper than London and far less occupied if you decide to guerilla

Central London to Mid Wales is between 340 and 400 miles round trip. Mid Wales is quite big. Cost depends on how many people and the vehicle. 40 to 60 litres of fuel costs between £40 (car) and £80 (Crew bus/van). I've done the return trip including a days shoot in a single day on several occasions. It's about organisation and just how much the location is worth it.

Hi Jane, Marlow and Nathan - thanks for all of your suggestions.
Jane - that's a great suggestion, I'll bare that in mind. I think I've found a good space now for the project however if that changes I'll let you know asap by messaging you directly.
John and Marlom, I appreciate the insight into Wales - I agree, I'd love to explore other areas. I didn't make the context clear in my original post but I am currently only looking for a location near to London as its only a 1 day shoot and makes sense for logistics. However I'd definitely be interesting in exploring these locations for future projects.
