just wondering about any cost protections / time saving measures one can take to prevent multiple shoots not taking place.

I have no idea what you're asking. Is it this: If you have a job lined up for a shoot, you turn down other jobs because they conflict with the job you already took, then that original job falls through. Now you don't have any job at all... welcome to filmmaking. Happens all the time, and there's nothing you can do about it.
