Fair rates for full time jobs?

7 years, 3 months ago - Vasco de Sousa

Okay, so some people on this list have day jobs. No problem. Some of the greatest innovators in art were amateurs.

But, let's say film was your full time job. What salary would make it worth quitting the day job?

I have access to average salaries in the US and UK per profession, but these are sometimes vague. (I know that administrators get paid more in the legal industry, for instance.)

There are different suggested rates per grade depending on the project budget, although that really starts at £350k for features. In all cases, you have to pay national living wage, and allow for ~25% extra for NI and Holiday pay. You do seem to be referring to having people on some kind of salary which is great, so that's where the holiday and NI come in, and you'll also need to factor in the payroll costs. Some roles on features MUST be PAYE according to HMRC, so you CANNOT pay them on invoice as "self-employed" without HMRC giving you gyp and trying to hit you up for the taxes employees fail to declare ;-)

Not all wages for people are equal enough to find a single figure that 'someone' could quit their day job for. Everyone has different needs and requirements that pull and push them in different ways. £300 per day for one person may be enough but not for someone else - for doing the same job.
