Filming in Tier 2 lockdown

4 years, 9 months ago - Tom Phanes

Hello,
since London has entered Tier 2 lock-down, with the recent resurgence in number of infections,
I am unsure about how this exactly impacts film production.
After browsing the gov.uk website, I couldn't find any related documentation which specifically mentions filming restrictions.
I've read through the BFC COVID-19 guidance, however, they explicitly say that these should be read in conjunction with the latest UK Government guidance.
Seeing as the BFC document is a guidance, I am not sure about the legality of filming during Tier 2 lock-down.
Does anyone have any concrete information or references I can use, which I could analyze and provide to my crew?

I am working on a no-budget micro short, which means there will be a skeleton crew under 6 (actors included).

Thanks,
Tom

I think this is just an untested area - even if not strictly illegal under Covid restrictions, you can still fall foul of failing to maintain a safe workplace, and if you get sued, it's a mess.

I posted recently about some practical steps for Covid measures on location/set, that may be helpful to get an idea of what a real paid professional safety consultant installed for us. It's all about minimising risk as opposed to by-the-numbers "x is safe, y is not".

I'm trying to develop a kit of simple measures ready out of the box for smaller productions to implement, containing things like a simple contactless fever thermometer, daily stickers for when someone is fever-free, logging cards to keep a 2 week rolling record of daily self declarations, etc., and I hope it'll help people to reduce risk based on some of the current more effective techniques and provide a record for if there are any challenges down the road, that you made real efforts to reduce risk, etc. It won't be ready this side of Christmas as I'll be out of the country, but will be working with those same safety consultants to try to make it simple for small projects!

Hi Tom,

I agree, I read through the entire Film London Covid Filming pages yesterday and the information is very vague. I'm intending to set-up a short and keeping the cast and crew to an absolute minimum. But will need to walk and shoot outdoors.

The Film London Guidance is here: https://filmlondon.org.uk/resource/code-of-practice

I'd be interested to know if anyone has had any problems and been told to stop filming because of restrictions?

Sam
