INDEXFrench women are more likely to be film directors, why?

If you look at a list of the top French directors, you'll see more women than you will in America or Britain.
Why do you think this is?

I understand your question - interesting.
Dunno - film has had more high-end cultural value in France for longer than elsewhere? Less commercial/hollywood-esque pressures? Women have a place in cultural heritage? Simone de Beauvoir, Collette?
I suspect role models & mentors have a huge effect on visibility and presence of women in certain sectors.

Perhaps I'll reword later. I was saying that female directors in France seem to do all right, despite facing the same challenges as elsewhere. Family life does not get in the way, despite what's said elsewhere. And, there are good directors in France.
Well, whatever. I guess I'll delete it as it has been misunderstood, and rewrite later.

Am I missing something? High Birth Rates and...?
PS Clare Denis is one of the best french filmmakers ever. Seen her work?

I used to believe this was true. Not any more, though it almost is! I did some research http://wellywoodwoman.blogspot.co.nz/2012/01/french-women-directors-great-news-not.html & then laid the stats alongside those from other countries http://wellywoodwoman.blogspot.co.nz/2012/11/after-i-completed-my-survey-of-new.html. And then was DELIGHTED to hear about this inspiring new charter that activists Le Deuxième Regard have created, with a lot of support from within the government and the film industry: http://wellywoodwoman.blogspot.co.nz/2013/10/french-feminists-make-history-with.html. Isn't it terrific? What do you think? Could the same thing happen in the UK? I hope so!!! :)
