I assume there are other people here who *didn't* get BFI Network Short Film Funding... Congratulations if you did!
Got any tips on other funds to apply to?
Or has anyone here actually made a short film for now money? It would be great to know what this is like in reality (are you using kit you already own etc).
Thanks

Hi George and commiserations. We missed out too despite the fact that the script has already won several awards and was a finalist for the KIFF’s Script to Screen comp and has interest from Maureen Lipman. So I don’t think we should feel that it’s necessarily a reflection on the work just that they can only fund so few.
In response to the question you ask about other potential funds there’s First Flights which is open atm and Shore Scripts autumn fund is now open. You might also try searching on filmfreeway as some of their script comps have cash prizes.
Congratulations to all of those who were successful with the BFI funding. That’s quite an achievement!

Hi Louise, George,
KIFF: I think it ought to be mentioned, so that screenwriters don't go off on a wild goose chase, that the S to S category is not running in 2025 - unless David can be persuaded otherwise. Lucky for us then, Louise, that we both got recognition this year;
FilmFreeway: This has got me several laurels to pad out my CV - for what difference that might make! While next to none offer to make the winner (see above), making judicious choices as which to submit to, IMDb qualifying fests, and/or those offering some web exposure if placed can push the project along. Also it helps to get on FF's algorithm. For some reason I am getting half a dozen offers a day in my inbox to submit to heavily discounted waiver code fests.
All best wishes.

Hi George,
When I attempted to acquire funding to make my short drama film, I failed to find any path through. By one organisation, I was told that shorts are the territory of youth as calling cards for careers to follow. So age was against me. Nevertheless, I made my film on a budget of about £20,000. I was fortunate that, in addition to a saving programme, I had a few additional funds from a sales transaction. I suspect there are universities and colleges who might ooperate as an educational exercise. At least I considered that possibility but I didn't reach a stage of finding one to cooperate. My main costs were locations, cast fees (Equity rates), equipment and of course crew, though who you need on a short film is your decision. Good luck with your project.

Sorry for the slow reply and thank you for all of your thoughts! It's an uphill journey, but I'm going to carry on trying. Have found the funding directory on Shooting People to be a helpful resource in general.
Has anyone got experience of Kickstarter or Go Fund Me? Any crowdfunding sites more useful for film than others?
Thanks
