Great directing Commentary tracks.

11 years, 4 months ago - Dan Selakovich

One of our fellow members was asking about directing classes on the web. I was trying to think of educational commentary tracks on DVDs. Do any of you guys know of any amazing commentary tracks on films by great directors talking about technique? Please list them! I'd be really interested too.

Thanks,

Dan

Really glad I asked this! Wim Wenders and PTA! You can't do better than that. Thanks guys.

I actually have that one sitting on my shelf, Tony. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for reminding me what a great film I have, but had forgotten about.

Wim Wenders commentary on Paris Texas is fantastic. Very director driven - why he shot scenes the way he did, approach to actors and more.

Joe Berlinger on Blair Witch 2 - Book of Shadows. It's a terrible film, but the commentary is very honest and Berlinger really goes into detail on how his vision for the film was hijacked. It's rare you hear a director talking so frankly about a film that failed, and that's why it's worth listening to.

Also, John Boorman's commentary on Point Blank with Stephen Soderbergh is really good.

And any Joss Whedon or John Carpenter commentaries.

The Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo is meant to have quite a few, though I think you have to get the American versions. Looks like a few of the extras are on YouTube too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQnx5KaZ-ME&feature=c4-overview&list=UUj4BOx5k1brI2bHHrNMOrAg

Thanks, Chris. It's not only rare, but unheard of. Worth a listen for sure.
