hints for in depth screenplay analysis?

11 years, 9 months ago - John David Clay

any general hints and tips on good screenplay analysis .e.g. recently rewatched the Outlaw Josey Wales and picking the redemmention theme reenforce by the cross motif or the character traits like the spit in 85% of the scenes. the war metaphor is more obvious (1975/76) - wondering as trying to implant more subtext and psychological meaning into several screenplays in development including a Horror WEstern / Action hybrid in retro 1980's style. Watched World War Z which takes the zmbie paradim quite well!

also looking for promotion for a WW2 set concept adapted from historical materials and how to redraft to visually give the audience the harshness and survival of the characters at the heart of the story. (I Close my eyes see stage32.com for synopsis.

Many Thanks

John

Start with a central idea, and build from there. It's hard to understand your two paragraphs, so maybe you should get some sleep and slow down.

Try to concentrate on one thing at a time. Remember, your audience doesn't know what you're talking about, you have to introduce them to your world slowly.

Correction: You can crash them into the world. But, you need to describe what you're saying clearly. Perhaps I meant to say clearly rather than slowly, I don't know.

Instead of slow down, I guess I should have said "say one thing at a time." I don't really like super-slow movies.

If you're wanting to analyse a script for academic purposes, that's one thing. If you want to learn from reading a screenplay (or book, or whatever), then just know what your problems are, and read, and you'll find solutions.

For your own screenplay, just read it out loud. When you've exhausted your own efforts, have other people, preferably actors, read through it with you. If they don't want to play any of the characters, then there may be problems.

Don't over analyse, just feel the flow.

If it's WRONG you'll know it. But if anyone could reliably tell the difference between "right", "Right", "RIGHT" and RIGHT!!!!!", film making wouldn't be a high risk business.

A wise man once said, "no one knows anything".
