Hospital Locations

6 years, 1 month ago - Gabrielle Finnegan

Hello!

Does anyone know of any hospital locations, preferably near Liverpool or Manchester. Needed for two days, a hospital corridor and adjoining room, for a micro feature. Low budget project, so any low budget locations would be great please! The scenes are set in the 1980s, so anything a little run-down would be great!

Many thanks,
Gabrielle

Any institutional corridor can be dressed to hospital pretty easily, fwiw. Maybe then a medical centre inspection room (ie a doctor's office and some dressing) and you're most of the way there.

Or there's a proper hospital standing set in West London https://thehospitallocation.co.uk/

BTW that hospital location company also has access to lots of period medical props, so you can probably get it dressed to 1980's fairly easily

Most universities that train nurses, physios and OTs have mock-up clinical areas ( single rooms, 4-bedded bays, bathrooms, treatment rooms and corridors etc) , which are often available at weekends at relatively low cost. You probably wouldn't be able to do much in the way of set dressing, and they shouldn't be very run down - but it is worth exploring.
I worked in hospitals in the 80s, and what it is most different now is what the staff wear, rather than the physical environment. Nursing unforms have changed, and back then nearly all doctors wore white coats. Curtains betwen the beds are very different but otherwise a ward is pretty much a ward.

I tried the hospital location in West London before, great sets but very expensive so the University route Stephen suggested would probably be your best bet for a micro budget.

Birmingham City University's Westbourne Road, Edgbaston Health Faculty has 4 bed training wards, corridors and an operating theatre. We filmed some of Internalised and a teaser trailer for Finders Keepers there in 2011. Current contact is Tracey Cutler. Tracey.Cutler@bcu.ac.uk

Wimbledon Studios used to have two hospital sets, I believe. I think they have left the site now. I just called them to ask where they ended up but the person I spoke to knew nothing about them. I'd recommend calling them again and speaking to someone in the know. Phone number is 0203 7733 719. Good luck, Tony. [I publish www.thestudiomap.com as a filmmaker's resource]
