How do I begin my career in music videos

6 years ago - Rohit Assi

Hi Guys!

My name is Rohit, I've just signed up for shooting people recently as I have just graduated from university. I am just wondering if anyone can help me. So from a very young age I have always had a passion for music videos. I've made a couple before but those opportunities where given to me by others which i am very grateful for. Any recommendations or advice on how I can get started and is anyone willing to collaborate which I will be very grateful for. :)

Cheers Guys!

Nobody just works in Music Videos. Financially it would be impossible to make a living. The people who work on Music Videos also work on Commercials, short films, fashion films, features and TV drama. It’s all one thing. If you want to direct then, look for unsigned bands that want a video and offer to make one for nothing. Sign up to Radar and start pitching (some are really low budget). Build up a portfolio of work. The more you make, the better you get at it and if you get really good, bands will come to you, your budgets will increase and you can start doing paid work for signed bands.

Mark is spot on. I don't know what they teach in uni these days, but the evident lack of advice on how students might translate whatever it is they teach into the real world is constantly evident from the number of new graduates who ask a similarly naive question. .

As Mark says, if you want to make music videos and if you're not an independently wealthy young toff, (a classic circumstance in this 'industry'), a much broader approach to genre and culture would be advisable to the point of being essential.

Hi Rohit, Welcome to the community. Make sure you sign up to the Music Video Bulletin to find out about the latest jobs and opportunities https://shootingpeople.org/bulletins/ If you are looking to find collaborators for your own music video then do post into Production > Get People https://shootingpeople.org/production/people I would also recommend checking out the work of Oscar Hudson who is a very young and talented music video director, who began his career by making skate boarding videos and short films http://www.oscarhudsonfilm.com/

Thanks,
Molly

Yer although my course was amazing and I really leant a lot in my 3 years of study, generally speaking I didn’t really get useful advice this is why I have been so unsure for a period of time. However you advice will defiantly be taken on board!
