How do you evaluate your screenplay? Test out thispr free tool

8 months ago - Ana E

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to share something I’ve been working on to make the early stages of filmmaking easier for short indie filmmakers like myself—Screenplayer (screenplayer.co.uk). It’s an independent tool built to help you quickly and easily break down scripts, analyze stories, and plan production.

When I first read a screenplay to consider producing it, my brain automatically breaks it down: Is the story producible? What will the budget look like? How can we make it better? screenplayer.co.uk is our attempt to turn that process into a tool that anyone can use.

✨ Here’s what it does:

-Gives you a Hollywood-style coverage of your story with grades, summaries, treatments, and loglines
-Breaks your screenplay down by scenes, locations and departments (props, costume, sfx, vfx, character etc.)
-Estimates budgets and points out things to consider in production

This tool is also perfect for funding applications, evaluating how producible your script is, and getting instant feedback on your story’s potential. We’re giving every registered user 1 free analysis, and you can try it out at https://screenplayer.co.uk/

We’re in BETA mode right now and gearing up to roll out feature-length script support in early 2025. I’d love to hear your feedback: Would you use the app again?
What would make it more useful for you?

It’s been a passion project for us, and I hope it can be a helpful tool for the filmmaking community. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Warmest regards,
Ana

It's very useful Ana, gives loads of helpful thoughts under a range of headings.

I would say however that it works as more of a starting point for someone to take the analysis and then tweak it to fit (which is maybe what you intend). Big note though - it did miss the central, important twist in the short film I uploaded and, as a result, didn't understand the point of the film. This may be an unfair criticism but it is clearly laid out on the last pages of the script although maybe it is too much to ask AI to see and understand it!

Definitely worth a try for filmmakers though.

Hi Alex, thank you so much for your feedback! I'm glad to hear that you found our tools helpful as a starting point as that’s exactly what it was designed to be. I am sorry about the missed twist. The AI engine we use still has its limitations when it comes to grasping subtle narrative structures, but we are updating it in the next couple of weeks to the most advanced model as well as expanding into feature screenplays. As technology evolves, I’m optimistic it will improve in detecting and understanding those deeper elements.

Out of curiosity, would you consider using it again for other projects or your feature screenplays if such option was available?

Thanks again for trying it out and sharing your experience! It's incredibly valuable!

Yes, I might, if I was planning to go into production. It is a clever tool, for sure!

Thanks for sharing this Ana. It's a very useful tool. Like the others have found, it struggled with following the story correctly and couldn't grasp the nuances of sections, focusing instead on pace, through whatever criteria, over story.
The pitch suggestions were very wordy, but that's always an issue with AI, from what I've seen.
Also, it would be good to be able to choose the currency
But a very helpful first pass, and invaluable for AD's and production members starting out, to see what the job entails. I found it useful to make that step forward, into the breakdown, without having to find someone. I will now find someone, but will have some starting points to dicsuss with them.
And top marks for the script deletion and awareness/understanding over AI data concerns!

Hi Tom, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts; I’m glad you found the screenplay helpful as a first step! That’s exactly what we wanted it to be: a tool to make things easier and more understandable before bringing someone in. And thank you for your points—nuances in storytelling and wordy pitch suggestions are areas we will want to work on as the app grows. And adding a currency option is a brilliant idea, thank you!

I’d love to hear what you would need to see improved or added to make you want to return and use it again? Your thoughts are very helpful in shaping what comes next.

Thanks again for giving it a go and for your kind words about the script deletion feature!

I’ll look, but does it do the same as Movie Magic?

Hi Franz, thanks for your question! Screenplayer is actually quite different from Movie Magic. While Movie Magic focuses more on production management, Screenplayer is designed as a first-glance analysis tool for the early stages of your development process. One key difference is that Screenplayer includes screenplay evaluation—it analyzes your script to identify cast, locations, props, costumes, and more, all in minutes. It’s meant to help you get a clear overview and save time before diving into detailed planning.

I’d love to hear your thoughts if you give it a try—let me know how it compares for you!

Hi Ana,
I tied the tool, was interesting. It got a few things wrong about the script (some of the characters, and the ending), but was good to see the breakdown of budget and the recommendations for keeping things low-budget. As a screenwriter and newbie Producer, I could see using this as 'first-pass' to help estimate budget (for pitch decks, funding competitions, etc).

Thanks for sharing!
Heather

Hi Heather, thanks so much for trying it out and for your thoughtful feedback! I’m really glad you found the budget breakdown and recommendations helpful. That’s exactly the kind of thing it’s meant to simplify, especially for pitch decks and funding applications.

I totally hear you about some of the script details being off, this it’s something we are working on improving as the app evolves.

Out of curiosity, what would you need to see or have in the tool to make you want to come back and use it again? I’d love to hear your thoughts as they’d be very helpful as we refine it further!

Thanks again for giving it a try!

Hi Ana,

It seemed comprehensive - with many useful categories. The script analysis part was less useful, as it got several things wrong and was basing the scores on that. I can't remember whether there were Comp suggestions, but that could be helpful. And I'd need a way to download the whole report, rather than trying to find the relevant web page (perhaps there's a way to do that already, but it wasn't obvious). But it's a good start, and something I'd consider using again.

Just gave this a try with my new short script and it has proven to be very helpful.
Is there any way to easily output the results either in a spreadsheet or in print?

You're also welcome to use my 8 page script as an example.

Hi Darren, thanks so much for giving it a try and sharing your feedback—happy to hear it’s been helpful for your short script!

At the moment, exporting results to a spreadsheet or print isn’t available, but it’s definitely something we are looking to add in the future as we grow our users. Thanks for bringing that up! And I really appreciate your offer to use your 8-page script as an example—that’s very generous of you. I’ll keep it in mind as we explore ways to showcase the app’s capabilities and marketing.

I'm also curious to hear what would make you use the app again, if at all.

Hi Franz, it can only process short screenplays at the moment, but we will roll out a feature-length version very soon. Was that the problem?

No - it seemed to accept my feature script but after going through all the hoops, there was a fee!
