How do you seek out local Retired/Pro Screenwriters as potential mentors?

12 years, 5 months ago - Matthew Prince

Hi,
I would like to know if there is a correct or smart way to find and reach out to local Retired or Pro Screenwriters in my home town? (Croydon and South East London)

I'm hoping that I can ask them to be potential mentors. It would benefit me greatly to talk to and gain the experience of someone who's been in "the industry". I've seen US scriptwriters who offer mentoring online, through e-mails and Skype, but they quote anything from $50 to $500! Even websites like Industrial Scripts and Script Factory seem out of my price range!

It's kind of a tricky question to ask!

I was tempted to say try www.stalkersanonymous.com but it is a perfectly sensible question to which I do not have a perfectly sensible answer

Why not ask in the screenwriters network?

Send me one of your scripts and I'll offer notes on one for free!

You could try putting an ad out on the wonderful "calling all pensioners" radio programme on Resonance fm http://resonancefm.com/. or making contact with Age Exchange in Blackheath - http://www.age-exchange.org.

There are a few mentoring programmes out there but not sure what you find for free.

There may be an evening course some of them teach, at the local college or university. These can be subsidized, and even free if you're out of work or on a low income.

Our local university has an outreach program that offers courses to the community, and a few years back I got some great mentoring in Photoshop, guitar, and other subjects from professionals with long career histories, for next to nothing in the evenings. (Another plus is these could lead to a degree at little or no cost.)
