INDEXHow is the best way to handle / experiment with cine lens?

Just wondered about best methods of testing out cooke s4 / Hawke V / REd primes / ARRI masters etc. - for cine reference
1) hire from rental house @250pd
2) borrow from fellow AC / DOPs?
3) other suggestions???
Just wonder so one can learn individual lens characters for future ref.
Thanks

call the rental houses, ask if you can come in and check out some of their gear....if you are legit, they will let you, if they feel you are just looking to get over on them, the will probably say no....once there you and most likely one of there guys will set up a camera or 2 and check out the lenses view test charts....test the lens at several different f-stops (t-stops) make notes

If you live in the area, you can sometimes just go to a shop and try them out. Also, if you're near a film school that has workshops, you can often give them a go.
Also, make a note of what you're using on production. If crew members do their job correctly, and take down notes on what they're using, they learn about their gear's capability much more quickly.
