INDEXHow to get script report writing experience?
3 years, 3 months ago - Anna Loewy
Hey there Shooting People community, I hope you can help?
I am making a return to the film and TV industry after a break of a few years. I have worked as an assistant director, script supervisor, assistant script editor, and development assistant in my time.
Now, I want to get into script editing and development.
So my question is this: has anyone got any experience of gaining freelance script reading work?
And, are any screenwriters out there open to sharing their screenplays (no matter what development stage they're at) with someone who's looking to gain experience on delivering development notes?
Your work would be protected - I'd provide an NDA agreement ahead of time so that you can be sure your work is protected.
In return, I'll deliver comprehensive writer reports of your work that will assess the screenplay in terms of genre; character arcs; and identify opportunities for enhancing the script so that you can be sure you're reaching your vision.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts on how to bust into script editing, reading and development.

Hi Anna,
I showed one of my scripts to someone else asking the same question about ten years ago. He tore the first page to shreds, it was kind of fun to look back on, the most detailed feedback I got outside of film school.
Can I ask why you want to work with writers instead of producers?
While I would love your feedback on my scripts, my advice would be not to offer your advice for free. You obviously know a thing or two about screenplays, you are ready to go pro.
Make sure to charge enough to live on, and give yourself enough time to market your skills.
You can charge as much as you like on sites like Fiverr, or go through your own website. Advertise on youtube or Facebook, but don't waste money on the phonebook.
And I would practice on existing films, like Batman and Robin or Waterworld. That way you can show your example feedback on your site in a way that would entertain your potential customers.

Hey Vasco,
Thank you for your positivity and feedback.
I think a fifty-fifty approach that would split my time between working in development with writers then also with producers would be an ideal blend. I like the hands-on aspect of working with writers; the problem-solving, and the conversations that come out of working on a creative project and the opportunities to refine. With producers... I guess that's an area I'm still to discover.
I can totally imagine the feedback you might have received from your story above. Tearing a writer's work to pieces is SO not the way to build confidence, trust, or a useful reputation.
I also appreciate your tip about charging for my time. I know that I have a decent grounding in story and scripts, so I can feel confident to charge.
Thanks again -
Anna

An important bona fide to offer will be your previous work - have you written/directed/produced things that show what you offer? For instance, if someone hadn't gone through to production, they may add elements which drove the budget right up without realising!

Hi Paddy,
You are so right: it's all about proof these days. I'm developing my small slate of projects from concept to screenplay so that I can build a reputation on the grounds of not only talking the talk but also walking the walk.
I'm on the Industrial Scripts course currently which is some validation. The rest... Well... I'm working on that.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Hi Anna
I've been developing a Murder Mystery for some years. Kate Leys gave valuable feedback on an early draft and I've done what she suggested but it's still not camera ready. I'm happy with the story but it does drag a bit in places. I'd value your input.
My experience in the film world is mostly in art department; from big budget features to music videos. I think I have a grounded knowledge of the business and know that it's worth getting the script as good as possible before attempting production.
If you think you might be interested, please email me at gary@spiritbased.com and I'll send you a 2 page synopsis.
Best wishes to you.

Hello Anna,
May I introduce myself. I have just finished directing one of the six short drama film screenplays called FREE AGAIN, which I have wriiten over the last decade or so. This period followed more than 25 years of directing broadcast television drama series and serials with a background of a further 10 years as a floor manager / assistant director and 6 years in theatre stage management.
I have no further plans to direct myself, though, as a mentor in a superviroy role, I would happily consider working with a director with the necessary skills and approach to go into production with at least one of my other screenplays.
In response to your post, I would be happy for you to read my screenplays and to discuss with you your proposal.
If this iis of interest, please e-mail me at nicholas.prosser@gmail.com
