How/where can I work volunteer and learn how to use a camera on a set?

Hi guys,

I've recently developed a script for a short film and I'm currently being at the stage before shooting! Because I have lack of experience on how to use a camera on a professional level, I would love to hear your opinions and advice on how/where can I work volunteer and learn how to use a camera on a set/production? I would like to avoid any paid classes or seminars because I don’t have the extra budget to do so!

There's more to making a movie than using a camera. It might be an idea to look for runner jobs, to see how the whole thing is run. I was observing productions when I was offered small jobs like extra, runner, teleprompter, etc.

If you're on set, people start asking your opinions about things, and eventually can let you try new things.

If you want to look for opportunities to volunteer, there are some in the bulletins here.

Best to go out and shoot something ,get familiar with using the camera and its controls, get a friend and shoot a silent film and practice different shot's. Or you can apply for voluntary camera person/ camera assistant roles on here or places like starnow.

I'm doing a one day shoot on a short film 27th April your welcome to come down and do some shooting

What are your ambitions? To be a dp or a director?

I will be shooting on a feature later this summer. Send me some details of your experience and I will arrange with the producers for you to come and shadow the dp and camera crew for a day or two.
