I am looking for (unpaid) experience/training in making films!

7 years, 10 months ago - Lotte Lewis

Hi I am looking to get experience in filmmaking - most training courses are too expensive - if anyone is making a film & would be happy for me to come along and learn from being part of it, that would be amazing! I have many skills that would be useful on set: good organisational skills, paperwork, able to think on my feet, a good eye & direction, etc.

Or if anyone has any recommendations of ways to get experience in filmmaking, or very cheap courses? Of course I am just going out with my camera & learning that way too, but would be great to learn from other's experiences as well.

Thanks!

Lotte

You join thousands of others in your aspiration and circumstance Lotte. You might improve your chances by revealing where you are based and what your geographical and time limits are. Withstanding the faux morality of socio political dogmas, I imagine that most producers would want to no what sort of age bracket you're in. Can you drive, use a computer, carry stuff, speak other languages, have learned skills etc. I doubt your current directorial and camera skills will feature large for producers who might regard you as a trainee and runner whose primary virtue is a willingness to supply at least a modicum of usefulness in exchange for a reasonable level of training opportunities.

You've probably already looked, but just in case you haven't, there's a ton of filmmaking tutorials on youtube. Film Riot is popular, for example.

I was in the same position as you a few months back. I don't have enough money for film school or day courses and I didn't know any filmmakers. But what I did was get onto the set as a runner, where I was able to observe professional filmmakers (asking them a few questions here and there), and also joined a team of beginner filmmakers on shooting people (being an AD) and we've gone out to try and make a film together. Those two things combined have helped me massively and I really have learnt a lot by doing that. I hope that helps.

I think John has asked the important questions especially where you are and your skills. I need help but based in Brighton and available via franz@imperialfilmproductions.com
