ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXI'm just about to sell my first feature script to an incredible production company. I need an agent! Anyone got one they would recommend?

Any reason you need an agent? I know writers/directors who have produced several projects without one, as the best agents wnat to see that you're financially worth their time to bother with to begin with, and does 15% of the script sale value make it worth their while?
If you're already ready to sell for good money, just hire a media lawyer to represent you (as that's what an agent will effectively have to do anyway), or if we're talking relatively small money where that doesn't make sense, get a second pair of eyes from someone sensible who can read the contract with you.
Congratulations, BTW, and feel free to PM if you're reserved about the details but want to continue chatting!

Thank you for that. You're right, I should just hire a media lawyer for this one. So far I've managed fine without an agent I suppose :)

You can also join the Writer's Guild of Great Britain for advice when selling your script, fees, legal terms etc. (I think there's an annual fee of something like £180).
Congratulations btw!

I've sold feature scripts without an agent or a lawyer.
Unless the contract is super complicated you don't need to bother.
Have you asked for any special considerations (If the prod comp has bought it then they'll probably own it out-right, meaning unless they hire you for re-writes your part of the process is done).
How many pages is the contract they've sent you?

I don't have an agent, but I want a good one. I would not recommend most of those who call themselves agents, especially anyone who charges a writer.
However, if you can get an agent like CAA or ICM, then you would be a fool to go without them.
All the high paid screenwriters (just like the highest paid footballers) have agents negotiate their contracts. Many agencies even package films, so the actors and writer are represented by the same agency. (So, you might want to look up your favourite talent and see who represents them).
I dislike the idea of packaging fees. But yeah, negotiating is a pain, especially when it comes to your own creative work. I probably will not talk to another producer again until I get one.
If you are dealing with American production companies, definitely look for one who is signed with the WGA (Writers Guild of America).

Hi Joe, I am curious in the process which led to get your script read and consequently purchased by a production company - whether you were already in a position that enabled you to establish a relationship with a specific contact or whether it was a case of trial and error, through sending your scripts to different companies.
