Looking for a remote house/cabin location in the UK

3 years, 12 months ago - David Yorke

Hey shooters

I was looking to start my first feature film and I had access to a wonderful location for free in Scotland, It was a large house isolated in the middle of the woods. This location is no longer available as the owners are having work done in the only 3 week slot that was available.

Originally I was crafting a story around this location as it's rare you get something so good for free, but now I don't see the point as the feature was going to be this journey, using the resources avilable and basically going on a journey to create something that would hopefully be good and sellable, so then I could pay the cast and crew. Without the location there doesn't seem much point as I dont have a lot of money and to get somewhere for 3 weeks would cost a lot.

So as my last desperate attempt does anyone know or have access to a house/cottage/lodge that is isolated and has some interesting locations close by like a river/sea or woods? guessing Wales would be the best bet.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
David

I know one of the people who has this location - https://www.live-roleplaying.co.uk/LARP/map.html - dunes, ruins, wooden one room cabin, woods, river.

The planning conditions are "single hirer only" and while they use it for the larping, it's available for others when they aren't using it.

I have no idea what they might want to charge, but if it looiks good, ask :-)

Alas anywhere in any kind of servicable condition is rammed with tourists right now (British holidays mean some places are changing hand at double the "usual" rate, demand is that high).

If you can wait for Autumn/winter, prices will probably crash and availability increase hugely

I live in the west of the Lake District. I could take pictures of landscapes and buildings. Seen a few properties advertising holiday lets.

I am going to be exploring my local area anyway with my new camera.

What dates are you planning to shoot?

I'm grateful that the Mid Wales tourist board isn't too effective. The "staycationers' have over looked some of the best unspoiled country and coastline in Britain.

Ah I feel your pain. Found a great free location and then: Denied!
But I can offer a couple of suggestions:
I've been working with a company the last year, and they took advantage of Lockdown to rent some great places that otherwise would've been empty. Shot back-to-back features, several times. (AirBnB, rental cottages etc) Okay, lockdown is over, but if shit goes tits-up over Xmas then who knows, we might get shut down again. Use that in your favour.
I was looking at hiking on the West Highland Way the other week (for example), and they have loads of lodges, boffies, etc. They're probably closed in winter, or have very low traffic, so worth checking out. In my experience, people outside of London are more excited about having someone film at their property, and for a few bucks and some Instagram posts, they may be very accommodating.
3: Build a cabin yourself? Do you know anyone with a patch of land? Build one yourself, then you can make it just as you imagine it (they did it in Dog Soldiers).

hi, not sure if you have found anywhere, or how big your production is, but I filmed in a fabulous location in Tiverton North Devon. It's a really old cottage that is in the middle of no-where! Actually you can't drive right up to it, so you walk across a field to reach it. It's at the bottom of a valley and it's like it's been stopped in time...fields, woods, and river all there. The owner is very helpful, and has been hiring for a number of horrors. Let me know if you want any other details.
