INDEXLooking for Horror feature script achievable on £30k budget
4 years, 10 months ago - Zoe Cunningham
I'm a producer with access to a £30k budget. I've teamed up with a director and we're keen to see if we could put together a saleable horror film for that amount. (I know it will be a challenge!)
I've produced a few short films, including two of which I'm really proud:
My first (on £10k budget) Symptoms: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Symptoms-Dan-Lam/dp/B0757Z6LDM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=symptoms&qid=1574448934&sr=8-4
You have Been Chosen, included in the Silent Eye series (zero budget): https://www.amazon.co.uk/You-Have-Been-Chosen/dp/B07F2ZJ2B3/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=you+have+been+chosen&qid=1574449011&s=instant-video&sr=1-1
I've also recently completed a £10k feature, with another one very close to completing post and I'm keen to try something slightly higher to see if we can sell it for higher than the budget.
I'm looking for horror scripts with minimal locations (ideally one), minimal cast (ideally 2-4) and minimal special effects. If anyone has anything suitable please drop me a line.

Hi, Zoe. I might have something for you about issues of mental illness during isolation period. Got an outline but could develop it into a script straight away if you like the idea. Let me know if interested!

Hey Zoe. I've been working on a horror script set in a hotel called "Cavities" and so far I have 5 characters but that can easily go down to 3-4. Its unfinished at the minute but shouldn't take too long and I personally feel like it has a "The Shining" feel to it.

Thanks Glen. Please do send over what you have and we can see if it's the kind of thing that would work for us - zoe@zoefcunningham.com.

Hi, Zoe
My short play THE REFUGE (probaby an hour) was produced at the Barons Court Theatre, London in February (the week before lockdown - how lucky was that?!). Anyway, it's a spooky tale set in a house in Cornwall in the 70's but would convert to modern day easily enough. Here's a brief description. I 'd be pleased to send you the script, flyer and great reviews if you're interested. One set with slight changes doubled as the hotel lounge and the local cafe. 6 characters total - 7 if we included the ghost herself.
All is not as it seems when Clare pays husband Paul a surprise visit at a lonely hotel in Cornwall. Christmas looms but the mood is far from festive. Is the scratching the sound of rats or something far more sinister? Meanwhile more than coffee is brewing in a local café as a horrifying secret bubbles to the surface…
All best.
Lynne

Thanks Parvez - will dp.
Thanks Lynne - I think we will prioritise projects that are ready to go in a feature film format. Given that, thanks for your offer but I'll leave this for now unless you decide to redevelop the script for screen in the future. Congrats on getting the play out just before lockdown!!

Probably around the 90 min mark - again just to keep the cost down.

Do you already have all the cameras and equipment + access to several locations? I'm trying to figure out how a £30K feature could happen. Unless you have those things in place, it will have to be something with few locations and a small cast. How set on 'horror' are you?

James, Zoe stipulated "minimal locations (ideally one), minimal cast (ideally 2-4) and minimal special effects."

I have a one location feature script, but it is a thriller. Which is why I asked how attached you were to the horror idea. Thanks.

Got it, thanks James. The line between a self-container thriller and a horror can be a fine one, so I'm happy to take a look.

Hi Zoe, we're currently crowd funding for a feature comedy horror called Murder Ballads but also looking for further budget. It has a fair few more characters than you say but wondered if you fancied taking a look. There are more details at www.murderballadsuk.com and can send you the script.
We have Giles Alderson (The Dare, Arthur & Merlin, A serial killers guide to Life) as an Exec Producer too.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Zoe, I just sent you a feature script set almost entirely on the night shift of a suicide helpline... Unfortunately, it does actually have a few other locations, so might not be quite what you're looking for, but I though it was worth sending anyway. Thanks

Hi Zoe, hope you're well. I've just completed filming in the lead role of Beth in indie horror feature film 'Wyvern Hill'. The best ever experience! The budget was 5K believe it or not!!! Tremendous small crew who have worked with the director many times, a great cast, multiple locations and a manic schedule as we shot it in 23 days without a break in Hereford. We worked long hours, Covid safe and I genuinely loved every wonderful, challenging, exhausting minute of it. The director Jonathan Zaurin was outstanding. Check it out on IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12474816/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1 Good Luck xx

Hi Pat!!! I am great, thank you. I hope you are doing ok given all the madness that is going on with the world.
That is really super interesting to hear about “Wyvern Hill”. Like you I find being on set exhilarating and so I am very interested in super low budget filmmaking just so we can all spend more time doing what we love!
Would you be able to introduce me to the director? I’d love to chat more to him about how he managed the finances on so low budget a project.
Take care xxx

I’d love to send you a 7 Pager Doc for these two projects if you’d be interested?
