I have an opportunity to pitch to a development executive at the end of the month for the first time. I am keen to speak with people with this experience to ensure i am well prepared beforehand!

Hi, may I ask how you got a meeting with a Dev Ex without a treatment ready? I don't mean to be rude, but I'm also in pre-prod for a feature doc and wondered if there is a platform you used to reach out the to Exec? Or was it a personal connection? Thanks, Ian.

Hi Ian - fair question! It was through a personal connection.

If it's not yet clear. The vectors are one third talent/quality, one third networks/ who you know, one third money and three thirds luck. Just to be procicative it's also entirely magic.

I would say have your 3 minute verbal 'elevator pitch' for the idea down to a tee - practise it beforehand with colleagues in the industry or friends. Anticipate any questions they might have about the project in advance (again ask any friend) and have the answers eg access to the talent, the look of it, the tone, potential budget etc. Have ideas for directors etc and know the audience for it (that is very important) ie who is going to watch it and on what platform do you think it will be watched eg streamer, broadcast etc. Finally, show immense passion and a very personal connection to the film ie why are YOU making it and no-one else, and also very importantly why NOW? How is it interesting in the current climate. Hope that helps, good luck!
