Looking to gaining experience shadowing directors any advice?

Hey All,

I'm looking to gain more experience from directors on set and would love to shadow a drama director for a couple of weeks. I wondered if anyone has done this before and what advise you would give to find a drama director I can shadow.

Many Thanks

Why would a director working on an intensely consuming obligation want some unknown and unrelated person hanging around and looking over his shoulder?

Perhaps a better approach might be to offer something of actual value to the director and the production, such as runner services with an understanding that you're doing it for an opportunity to work closely enough to observe the director, be his dogsbody for example.

Hello Makon,
On different drama serials - EastEnders, Emmerdale & Brookside, I have been asked to accommodate observers to shadow me as a director. One went on to a successful career as a drama director. Another was a director of classical music programmes and was very interested in the very different process between his field and drama. Another was a theatre director. On a training project in Kazakhstan, I also trained 6 directors to direct that new country;s first television drama project a weekly serial. There's an institutionally provided oportunity. Major terrestials and publicly supported projects are obligated to provide some training places on productions. My observations only took account of independent productions.

Well intervened Nicholas
