Low/No budget horror feature film

3 years, 9 months ago - Sean-Patrick Courtney

Hello

This is my first time posting here and I'm not sure how it works.

I've written a script for a Low/No budget horror feature film (Slasher film e.g. Scream and Halloween), it's my first attempt to write a horror film script as well. I'm an actor and a writer and I have no idea how to even start producing a movie. I have no idea how to organise a cast and crew, how to get funding, or how to find or get a location. (The location in my script is a big or fairly big house and the entire story takes place on the inside and outside of the house, apart from a small scene in a separate house at the beginning. I hope that makes sense?)

It's a Low/No Budget film so unfortunately it's unpaid.

I'm based in London.

Would anybody be interested in helping me make a Low/No budget horror feature film?

Thank you
Sean

Synopsis:

A bunch of friends who work in a cinema can't make it home for Christmas because they live too far away (Outside the UK) and it is too expensive to travel so far for such a short period of time. So, before the Christmas period begins at the cinema they decide to get together at a house just outside the city for a Christmas style weekend. Throughout the night somebody wearing a Wolf Mask starts taking them out, one by one, and they have to figure out who is taking them out and why while trying to stay alive.

Script is available on request.

Hi Sean,
I'd be interested in collaborating with you on your low /no budget horror film.
I've worked as an animator and editor, and have been looking to get more involved with producing.

Many thanks,
Zrouge

Happy to be a part of this if you need an actor or need the dialogue punched-up.

Be real about where you have to spend money.

Crew on Set : assume free ones will be friends and friends of friends. They need to believe in you, or their friend who believes in you. Because to get their commitment, they need to know they won't be wasting their time. You might get strangers, but do make sure they will be as committed as you are, at least for the hard to replace roles.

Cast : Slightly more forgiving, so might be strangers, even if free. They can walk away with clips and photos even if the films fails to complete.

Gear : if you can't afford to hire, you'll need to adjust shoots to use whatever you can get.

Location : Unless you know someone with such a property, and draw a blank here, you will almost certainly have to rent one. This will probably be a chunky lump.

Catering : People will forgive almost any amount of stress if you keep them well fed and watered on set. And leave at the drop of a hat on day three of sandwiches:-) Get a cooking friend on side and a bit of money goes a long way with rich stews, cake, fruit etc.

Good luck.

I'd make some shorts first to be honest. Learn to walk before you can run etc.

Brendan nails it. A feature, even a low-budget feature, is a hell of a lot of work. Jumping into features as a novice could be really disillusioning. Spend your money making a short and getting a feel for directing and producing and then build on it. You will learn a lot.

Hi Sean, Im a Producer / DOP with kit and can edit. Im also looking to make a low budget indie film with minimal crew so this interests me. I have 25 years corporate, commercial and short film production experience. I like the sound of it - and have casting experience. You may need to spend some money on grade and sound mixing though. Beam me up if you're still looking for someone! james@jwp.tv

Hi,

Marlom gives good tips (esp. about food!), but as Brendan says, you should do a short first. You can film a short horror-slasher in the woods for peanuts.

Also, whether it's short or feature, people will be more willing to work for nowt if the script is good. Your premise sounds a bit muddled: A bunch of friends all work in a cinema, but in a foreign country? Like, 5 Brits working in a cinema in Spain? That seems quite odd. Does it need to be Xmas? Does it matter that they work in a cinema? Why not just 5 friends who go for a weekend away?

I'll echo what's been said. Make something short to test ideas and use it for festivals as a calling card. However, asking people to work for free is not good. I appreciate you may not have funding, but at the very least you have to feed people, and that costs money. It doesn't matter if you raise £10 or £100,000, write something using what you have access to.
