Mosfilm

Has anyone shot in Russia? I'm trying to contact Mosfilm as they have WWII Berlin street sets on their back lot which I need for my www.MargeryBooth.com but I can't seem to be able to contact them. I've emailed via their site, even using my iPhone translator app to write in Russian and I've tried the cultural attaché at their London embassy. Any suggestions? Cheers - Franz franz@imperialfilmproductions.com

Hello Franz,
I suggest to call by a phone into Russian! Now I am located at the Moscow and I can tell them. Also, I can arrive to Mosfilm and I can contact directly.

It is necessarily to call many times to many numbers of people. If you wish to hire me as an assistant of executive producer, then I can help you.

Remember, overseas shooting is very expensive, no matter where it is. You'll need flights, visas and work permits, hotels, ground transport, per diems, catering as well as needing fixers/co-producers to handle local labour, labour laws, currency conversion and local accounting, translation, kit hire, probably local carnets, as well as finding local units, paying fees and people who need paying, etc. It's a big deal, it takes a team to get right. And you cannot claim a DCMS Tax Credit, so it's effectively +20% cost immediately. Plus reclaiming of overseas VAT/sales taxes creates extra overhead.

Also consider if the total cost is say £60k how much set you can build and how much VFX set extension you can do. Quite a lot. And £60k is a conservative estimate of total cost...

Until you guys left the EU, I might have suggested, you know, Berlin. But who knows how labor shakes out now.

I've not shot in Russia, but Croatia. Holy shit, those crews were slow. I wonder if Russian crews are the same?Plus, at the time, bribing was how you got shit done. Having said that, the tax incentives were spectacular. I really think you're going to need a fixer in Russia to smooth the way (from what I've heard).

So, given all of that, once again I have to agree with Paddy. I would start getting bids from VFX companies.
