INDEXMoving to London to work in film

How and where do you find work?
I'm in the South West and I've not found an opportunity for any on-set experience in any capacity where I live. I also can't find any office jobs in film here. I'm hoping to start a career in film but I don't want to and can't afford to move to Bristol or London, where all the jobs seem to be.
All of the training schemes or programmes seem to be mainly in London. Even if I got onto one of these programmes, I wouldn't be able to afford to participate because I would have to rent in London, which is mad expensive.
Does anyone have any advice? To work in film do you need to be in London?
I'm not looking to jump into directing or anything, I just want to find paid runner jobs or entry-level jobs but all I'm seeing is London / Bristol.
Any advice would be great. I'm new to Shooting People.
Thanks

Where are you in the South West? Portsmouth has a small film community. I live near Bognor Regis and I know what you mean but there are jobs happening around here from time to time keep your eyes peeled. Most of the work is up in London though. If you live near me then perhaps we can do something together I have some projects that I could use a hand on.
Best of luck

I totally understand how you feel. I live in Bradford all the way up North and am always frustrated by the lack of opportunity in the Film industry for people like me living in poor Northern towns. If anyone is working in and around the Leeds/Bradford area looking for runners or any entry level jobs on set I would really appreciate the chance to work with you.

Lots of people in film and TV (there's a big overlap) live far from the major centres of the industries.
If you are a beginner without compelling experience, resources or some other 'potable' skill; then being far from potential mentors will make it a challenge.
But success is as much about nouse as it's about circumstances. It's not as facetious as it may seem to concider just 'starting at the top'. It depends on what is meant by 'getting work in the film industry' ? If it's as basic as wanting to work in film without any specific inspiration as to what one actually wants to do in that work, it actually makes the prospect less likely.
Many of the roles in film and television, that have long been relied upon are, or are becoming obsolete. Significantly because of technological evolution. AI is going to accelerate that obsolescence.
A personal career path might be better met by being a small cog in a small outfit than being a small cog in a big one, but only if that small outfit is actually making films. A lot depends on why one wants to work in film. Which parts of film production?
Those small and medium sized producer are peppered across the entire UK. Buy a copy of the Knowledge for lists of names, types and contact details.
If you're already in the South West and yet Bristol seems to be a difficult place to access, you will probably need to address the functional limitations of your current circumstances. The Bristol scene is also well connected to the Cardiff hub, which is quite thriving. The cost of living in Cardiff and it's near orbit is amongst the lowest for a regional capital with a significant film and TV community.
But your relevant circumstances, personal, material and intellectual resources must be a key element for others to appreciate before any remotely definitive advice can be offered.

Hi Jess,
I am a retired screen director (+ producer) and I live in West Sussex near Bognor Regis and Chichester. Though I can't offer you work and I know how difficult it is, I do have both some drama script material and a shoot kit of camera, sound and lighting, which I've used to shoot corporate projects and a short film. This is available for anyone to use, once approved by me. In television I had more tha 400 broadcast director credits on drama series and serials and I was a producer & director on Brookside, Emmerdale and EastEnders. Also, I did a lot of additional work in training, mentoring and lecturing.Last year I completed my last director gig - independently directing a short drama film I wrote, which I am now going to attempt tp enter into film festivals. Hi everyone,
Wow thanks for all of your responses. I'm sorry for the slow reply, I hadn't checked this. After doing more researching, I'll be looking to move to Bristol to start with. Thank you again for all of your comments, I'll reach out to those who mentioned talking more!
Thank you
Jess
