Both La Haine and City of God, they have so many similarities and are brilliantly made films!

True Romance mixes both genres well (Tarantino) ... True Lies...

Thelma & Louise & Columbiana good Female action films that are quite smart movies ...

On the action side, I personally think Shoot'em Up was hugely underrated by critics who didn't realise it was a spoof. The clue is in the title guys :-) The fact that the cast managed to appear to be taking it seriously is all part of the joke.

I also enjoyed Duplicity, though it's a script that requires concentration by the audience.

I think Luc Besson is the best at combining emotion and action. "Leon," "La Femme Nikita," "The Fifth Element" and "Angel-A" for a start. For straight romance... "Love Actually" comes to mind.

Amelie. Romantic, but also beautifully shot and composed.
Slumdog Millionaire. Essentially a love story but so much more than that.

'Love Actually' is underrated! Yes it's gratuitously Curtis, but it is playful and well constructed with the intertwined stories.

Wild at Heart.

I saw it a few months after I and my then girlfriend were first on the scene of a car cash. About 2am and it had happened just moments earlier. It is still the only such scene that I ever seen that captured the reality of what it was like.
