Need to convert a 15min DCP to an editable file please?

8 years, 7 months ago - Nathaniel Francis

I have a dcp which unfortunately has no vimeo or editable file present with it.
Is there anyone that would be able to help me out here please as the budget is super tight. Thanks

How does it present on disc? As an MXF? MXF is a container which contains many possible streams, so if you can get inside it you may be able to extract a string of JPEG2000 stills and an audio file and start rebuilding in an NLE

DCP is, by design, a presentation format, not an editing one. It's a bit like being given a blu-ray and being asked to reedit a movie from it - there are deliberate roadblocks. Perhaps you can recapture the film from it if you're fighting?

Wait, what? All the footage is a DCP file? Or you want to re-edit a short with only the footage IN the short? I have to say, I'm curious. If what Paddy suggests doesn't work, or you just can't crack the DCP, a LAST resort would be to set up your camera and re-record it off the monitor. Hardwire the sound from the monitor to your camera.

What Dan's suggesting is known as the "analogue gap", and had been fought by every generation of publisher (remember Macrovision?!). There will be generational degradation this way, and it's unavoidable - on the upside though you have audio sync and no lengthy transcode!

I would try following up on why the client only has about DCP and not the master assets - could be they didn't pay their editor/someone who is holding them to ransom - and so the rights position may be unclear, and indeed you may find yourself unpaid in turn. Upsettingly common.

HA! Yep! Last resort, indeed, Paddy. I have to admit that it made me a bit nervous posting a solution, even a crappy one, as this seems a bit unusual.

I've seen it in IT a lot as well, where a client is looking for someone to decrypt a site, or recreate a site on a different platform, where it's clear with a little digging that there's a good reason the original resource files aren't available...

I know a guy who makes DCPs professionally. Maybe he could help you out with his kit but it wont be free or cheap necessarily... and I know you're on a super tight budget. IM me if your'e interested. A mate of yours also Paddy over at Twickenham :)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question, and also for your masterful advice on all fronts in regard to the solution.

I know you've got this now but FYI... FFMPEG is your friend here. But converting DCPs generally is a pain in the arse for sure.
