INDEXNikon European Film Festival

Hey all
Did anyone else enter the Nikon European Film Festival?
The brief was to 'make an everyday moment memorable' - short film under 140 seconds.
Here's my entry: vimeo.com/rebelfoxfilms/thebridge. It was completed in less than 24 hours. I wish I'd known about it a bit earlier so I could have done something a bit more adventurous, but I'm quite happy with how this turned out considering the timings/no budget.
Let me know what you think?
Elise

Hi Elise,
I like it.
That said, I did wonder if there might have been some value in reducing the dialogue (or maybe none at all?).
Speaking as a screenwriter, a short film for a European competition might fare better if the story can be told without reliance on language - by that I mean, keeping it cinematic in a way that allows the viewer to read between the lines. For instance, seeing the woman get into the car angry, driving with a frown, sighing, shaking her head, irritated at the loud rain on the roof and splash from passing cars. Then relief as she experiences the silence as she passes under a bridge? Her disturbing countenance slowly easing with every bridge she passes under until at the end she smiles as she approaches the next one. Not a film maker but just a few thoughts. All the best, Bob

Hi Bob - thanks for leaving your thoughts. That's a very interesting take! I did wonder if the language would be a barrier for the EU Festival. I ended up choosing a very simple voiceover because I was worried visuals only would make it a bit bland/too subtle to understand the point I was trying to make. I think with a bit more time I could've invested in a more in-depth narrative (like you say, that gives some context) where the viewer would've read the meaning between the lines. However, interesting that you point this out and I'll definitely keep it in mind for further work! Ta x

I think you did a nice job with the limitations you had. If I were to do it, I'd choose shots that make the rain more intimidating so that you have a solid contrast to the protection of the bridge. As it stands, she has the protection of the car. Think about how your shots have an affect on your audience emotionally, and start from that point when choosing your coverage. What I do like about it is staying with the confines of car the entire time.

Hey Dan, thanks for your feedback! Yes, staying within the confines of the car really helped to capture the mood. Fair point about having more intimidating shots of the rain - I completely agree. I think we had about 40 mins of actual rain that afternoon before just a slight drizzle. Otherwise, I'd have captured more contrasting shots. Cheers, appreciate the comment.
