Online presence of distribution companies

Hi all,
a friend of mine was lucky enough to get a distribution deal for his microbudget feature. Out of interest I tried to do some research into small Indie distribution companies and noticed that there are barely any information about them online. Even though they have websites, those usually have barely any infos on them, or haven't been updated in years. And that confuses me a little. Naturally social media and online marketing is important for films, but why isn't that the case for companies? Or do I simply look at the wrong place for infos? Is it all happening in the real world, word of mouth, etc?

Because most small distributors are swindlers. I've never heard of a filmmaker coming out of a distribution contract unscathed from a small distributor. Never.

I hope, indeed, your friend is "lucky". I, personally, would never sign a contract that wasn't a Gross Adjusted Deal (meaning money up front) and opening in at least 5 cities. Most will promise 2 cities or none. I can four wall a film and open it in 2 cities all by myself. I can do on-line even cheaper. Why would I need a distributor? The majors or mini-majors are typically a safe bet and will do well for your film. Outside of that, do it yourself (unless there is upfront or complete buyout cash).
