Polarizer on Cine lenses

10 years, 6 months ago - Adam Russell

I normally shoot video on Canon L series or other high end photographic lenses (Zeiss Distagon) but am hiring Cine lenses for my next shoot. My question is do I need a polarizer like I would normally put on my photo lenses?

Thanks SP community. I think a Matt box with NDs and polariser ready to go is the solution then. Muchos

People often confuse polarisors with the 'sun glasses' effect of ND's or the contrast latitude correction of graduated filters. The polarisor has a set of elements in the glass a bit like window'blinds. The main purpose is to remover glare and reflected light, such as when you want to see through a window or through the surface of water by removing the reflected glare. The polarisor needs to be rotated until the 'blinds' are at the right angle to the subject. By looking through the view finder/monitor as one tuns the polarisor one can easily see the affect and set the lens. As Peter states above, it's not a lens that would normally live on the front of you camera except for that specific purpose and certainly not on a moving camera..

We do a lot of filming in galleries and they are fantastic for cutting out reflections in "museum/gallery" glass, which can really compromise your choices once in post. And who really wants to fix it in post?

It's not a matter of what lenses you are using. It's if what you are shooting requires a polarizer. Polas aren't often used for any kind of video because the camera has to be stationary. Obviously match the quality of the pola to the quality of the lens.
