Post Production Funding

8 years, 8 months ago - Ken Barnes

Hi Shooters. Hope this appeal for support is ok here. We've just launched a crowd funding campaign to help us through post. Great story! Great cast and crew, many of whom were found on Shooting People! Early momentum is key to reaching a goal apparently. Check us out! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-bones-on-greenwich-shore-cool-lovestory--2/x/13203392#/

Hi Ken,

£10k is a big chunk of change for post for a short, or small for a feature. Something I always like to see is the budget for how money will be spent, it can be reassuring to backers as there are a lot of complete guesses out in crowdfund land, and a lot of people incapable of delivering their products, so this may help set you apart and help you reach your goal :)

Hey Paddy. I think it's a feature.

Hi and thanks for your message. Yes, it's a low budget feature.

In the past, I've given money to crowd funded pictures for one reason or another. None have ever been finished, so now I'm a bit wary and pay close attention to not only the pitch, but the technical and story aspects of the campaign.

There's not much to go on from this pitch, Ken. 99% of the footage shown from the film is kissing, or I guess, romance. In an effort not to give away the plot points, you've given us little to go on. My pet peeve in films and television are love scenes. Not because I'm a prude, but because they stop the story. When I fix films, I try very hard to eliminate or cut down love scenes as much as possible. In a 3 minute pitch, you got a 10 second screen kiss. Of course, this may not be the case with your film, but I've got nothing else. I'd suggest cutting a proper trailer. Or show more shots from the film inside of the pitch, at least. You talk about a dark secret as if that's enough to keep us interested. It's not. You know the film. We don't. You have to make us feel something.

The sound on the pitch isn't very good. So I have to think; is this a reflection of the quality of the film as a whole? Perhaps it's because you have the dialogue on the left speaker and music on the right (mostly), instead of a center mix. I especially found it difficult to hear what the group of 3 were saying.

I'll stop here. I hope you get the money. I really do. But if you don't reach your goal, I'd certainly re-work the pitch in a way that makes us WANT to see the movie.

Appreciate the comments Dan. Will take them on board and try to fix a few things. Film is in the can and in need of funding for post only. The spontaneous pitch in the rain outdoors in a garden under a flight path was all we could get with the young team up north. (FYI, all the shots with young team are flashbacks with no audio so didn't have a sound recordist along.) Not the best excuse in the world. Will center audio and re-upload which should help. The rest of the film is very well shot and recorded with a great team, found here on SP!!

@Ken Barnes As I read my post today, it sounded harsh. I didn't mean it to be. I've been fixing films since 1986, and all I see now are things that can be improved. I'm sure everyone involved was awesome.

Let me come at this from a slightly different angle. If you need VFX and have a budget line for it in your £10k, then I will offer a discount of say 10-15% depending on what you need. That's effectively the same as offering you that amount in cash.

IM me for details or email to info(at)BadEdenVfx.com for more information and a chat.

Thanks Wozy. No need for VFX though.

@Ken Barnes No worries. Even if you find yourself needing invisible FX, don't hesitate to IM/email me. Like sky replacements, object removal etc...

Good luck.

@Lee 'Wozy' Warren Hey, Wozy, I'd love to learn to do "simple" FX like you mention. Any books, sources, software, you can recommend?

@Dan Selakovich Hey Dan. Simple stuff could be done in After Effects but like any software there's a learning curve. AE needs plugins though for workflows like tracking using Mocha Plugin for example (although AE does have its own trackers) or Foundry's Keyer.

However, for serious stuff I'd recommend NukeX for compositing and Houdini for 3D and simulation FX, like fluids or pyro etc.

Some people say that they don't want to get into 3D for 3Ds sake, like modelling for example. But one example I could offer is a shot that was filmed by a drone following some actors around a building but the drone shadow was on the side of the building and ground in places and that needed removing. You could 3D track the shot and layout some basic 3D geometry of the scene in Houdini. Map static images of the building and ground to the geo and re-render the shot. Re-grain the shot and bobs-your-uncle! So don't rule out 3D.

Books for compositing would be Digital Compositing for Film and Video by the fabulous Steve Wright. He also has some web videos that are pretty good.

Hope thats helpful.

@Lee 'Wozy' Warren It's absolutely helpful, Wozy. I've monkeyed around the AF, and it's pretty amazing, but was looking for something like you mention in your 2nd paragraph; NukeX, and all the rest.

Thanks so much. The internet, as you know, has so many vast opinions on this stuff, and I just wanted the opinion of someone that uses these things day in, day out. I really appreciate it!

@Dan Selakovich Glad to be able to help matey.

I started with AE years ago and used it for many indie type work. But once I started doing pure vfx (AE is very good at motion graphic type work and is a layer based product whereas Nuke is better at FX and is node based) I realised quite quickly that I needed something more robust and capable of much heavier lifting (its very powerful with a great toolset.

Nuke is the industry standard for compositing. But compared to AE it's rather expensive. It comes in three flavours: Nuke, NukeX and Nuke Studio. With prices ranging from about £2,500 - £5,600... But for a first seat purchase you can pay monthly. They have an educational version that's free as well.

Some online tutorials from FXphd.com and pluralsight.com are excellent and they provide the assets and files to follow along.

Good luck :)
