INDEXScreening room for epic short film
10 years, 10 months ago - Emily Munster
Hi everyone!
I've produced a 20 minute epic short film set in Medieval Yorkshire and am looking for somewhere to screen it. This screening would be for all of our Kickstarter backers plus cast and crew so potentially 100 - 150 people. Unfortunately we have no budget left, so if anyone knows of anywhere that would let us do this for free/very cheap that would be amazing. Of course if the place happens to sell food/drink we would be bringing 100 customers to you! Central London would be ideal (but not necessary).
This is our original Kickstarter campaign: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1416088252/the-cross-an-epic-short-film
And this is an article that was written when we were shooting up in Northumberland: http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/north-east-beauty-spots-provide-6478562
Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thank you!
Emily

Does it have to be London? I'm sure the Mockingbird in Birmingham would be delighted to accommodate you. 101 seat venue with bar at the Custard Factory in central Birmingham. Near both main stations.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for all your help! Unfortunately it does have to be in London so Birmingham isn't an option. Thanks though. Jeremiah - that sounds potentially perfect. Can I ask how much you had to put behind the bar to begin with?

Hi Emily, They didn't require any deposit. I think the spend was £500. Might have been £350. Either way, if you bring 100, you'll easily spend two or three times that. Give them a ring. They are happy to test your DVD before the day and have a chat about how you want the layout, whether you want chairs and mics for the Q&A. I honestly can't recommend them highly enough.
I had a film on at The Horse Hospital earlier in the year, and it's true what Andrew says, it's an amazing venue, too.

Hello, I have close contact with a 120 screen cinema in Harrow, which is on London tube. They will ask for £400 as minimum though but can have a word. Pls email me on kaujla@btinternet.com

Hi Emily, since I live in L.A. I will be of no help, but I do want to give you a suggestion/warning. Not too long ago, I went to a screening of films looking for funding. It was on a studio lot, BUT is was in a basement under one of the sound stages. Nothing but concrete. All of those hard surfaces made the sound unbearable. I felt so sorry for the sound designers. It would have actually been better to screen the films OUTSIDE than in this terrible place.
With that in mind, make sure you find an appropriate place and not just "anyplace." Have you checked with studios in and around London? You never know who might say yes. I've gotten free screening rooms at labs and mixing stages here in L.A. simply because I had brought those places a lot of work in the past. Is there anyone on your crew that might have the same experience in London? Just a thought.

Hi Emily
Do you know the Horse Hospital?
Very atmospheric (it did used to be a Horse Hospital) but is an Arts Venue and I reckon might compliment your film ?!

I know the answer to this - The Roxy. I just did my cast, crew and backers screening there and it was fabulous. You have to guarantee the bar, but if you are genuinely bringing 100 people you will spend several times the amount you have to guarantee. The screen and sound are pretty good and a decent size. And it's a really cool venue for stills of your event. It's not West End, but it is central London, next to London Bridge. http://www.roxybarandscreen.co.uk
