INDEXShooting in South Korea (how do i get actors?)
11 years, 4 months ago - Brian McGleenon
This summer I will be shooting a short film in South Korea.
It's a short horror set in Seoul (backstreets). Also has one scene in a rural house.
Has anyone any advise about shooting in South Korea?
Where could I get actors?
Where could I get a DOP?
Any pitfalls to avoid?
Help and advise would be great,
Thanks,
Brian.

I guess my first question would be: Do you speak Korean? Since it's a short, start with a Korean film school. Try to find one that has all disciplines in one place; an acting school, film school, music school, etc. Then it's a one stop shop. Give yourself plenty of time. You can't show up one week and shoot the next in a country you are totally unfamiliar with.

I speak a little Korean... Tho would need a fixer, I've a high level contact in KBS that I assisted when he came to Europe for a documentary. Tho the production company new moon sounds like a great lead...
Thanks a million,
For all your thoughts so far, and I hope to report back with developments, am going over there in a week to meet people.

If I've ever shot abroad, I've always looked for a fixer in that country, where do you find a fixer? Well my first port of call has always been Production Base. Ask there, people generally can point you in the right direction or know people who know people.

Hi Brian,
Check out 'Seoul Film Commission' (http://eng.seoulfc.or.kr). They might be able to help you for a recce or actual shoot in South Korea. We used them when we filmed a C4 documentary there. Good luck!

Brian email me at gktime@aol.com and i I will help you. Don't have time to write all the info right now ... but you can share it with shooters later. Hardly anyone speaks English in Korea.. I have just been there for a while, can connect you when I know more about your project. Am Asia based screenwriter, producer and educator at Tisch School of Arts, Singapore. There are fantastically well trained DP's here who have shot all over Asia, speak Korean and most Asian languages, actually are from all over the world. gk46@nyu.edu

Hi Brian
I filmed in South Korea, as an actor, 3 years ago – it was S Korea’s promotional film for their 2018 Winter Olympic bid – and the production company was British: New Moon Productions http://www.new-moon.co.uk/ If you dropped them a line, they may be able to answer a few questions and/or give you some useful contacts.
