Shooting People/Mandy/etc needs an App to Cast & Crew projects

7 years, 5 months ago - Matthew Prince

I know of The Green Room App for casting and crewing movies and Kitmapper for loaning equipment, but why isn't there a universally-liked App for casting and crewing in the UK and America with the kind of flexibility and reputation that Netflix/Amazon has?

It should be linked to a main website with a map country wide that can scale down to a city and town level with tiered membership: standard and pro. This could really get projects started by connecting actors and crew who may only live on the other side of town, but never know each other.

I am not a tech guy or financier, but an App at this level is long overdue. So how can we make it happen?

Hi Matthew,

You mention Mandy (formerly CastingCallPro/FilmAndTVPro) which has a pretty good interface for casting and crewing, certainly not the worst. If you mean a phone app, I'm not sure it's that big a deal, is it? I mean when advertising a role it tends to be for a film and so have at least one laptop in Production!

Or am I misunderstanding? :)

If you mean a phone app, I see no need. This type of site is information dense and needs a decent screen to view and a proper keyboard to enter info.

And Crewr.com and Actr.com are gone (damn, would have been worth a punt).

If you mean that no UK site - SP, Mandy etc - has achieved universal love, and you have better ideas, there lies an opportunity my son :-)

Cheers

I'm not sure what you mean. I can think of sites like meetup, and what you're saying also reminds me of hiring uber drivers. (I don't use Uber, but from what I've heard that's what it sounds like.)

When I worked at BT, they tried to create a "app" for taxi drivers and buying cinema tickets. They advertised it heavily while working on the tech, and then gave up before it was finished. That was years before I heard of Uber or Netflix. Now there are more competitors, more options similar to what BT was trying to do, but BT still isn't in the game and wasted all that money.

Lesson? Don't advertise your idea when it isn't ready.

If I were making it, membership would be free, but there'd be prefered placement through adverts (like the yellow pages and search engines have.)

I think you might be the man to start a business creating such an app. Work on a plan, let me know when you're looking for investors or at least ready for a coder. How to make it happen? Advertise for a coder as a partner, outline a plan for your idea, and approach financiers together.

(If you like, private message me with your contact details and more information, and I'll see if I can help or know any coders who can understand you. Maybe we'll find an idea that works.)

One of Shooting People's lesser known competitors just developed an app, I just received an email about it this morning.

Which one is it ? What is the link?

@Matthew Prince Never mind. It's just Talent Manager. It's not connected to maps. However, if you outline your needs, I'd be willing to invest in it, or at least try my developer friends. One guy I know really needs work, and he might go for it.

The reputation will be the difficult part. I'm not sure we can duplicate Amazon's sweatshops or Netflix's high levels of debt.

Now I didn't know about about Talent Manager but it is doing exactly what I was talking about. However, being available in an app and using a scalable map woulld be such an improvement. They need to advertise it more! How come I'd never heard of it until now?
