Where best to crowd fund for making a film or a short?

6 years, 9 months ago - Nat Nollid

Hi, can shooters advise on where best to crowd fund given the many platforms on the net? We are looking to crowd fund a few of our projects. They range from sci-fi, to comedy, to art house-type to documentary to soft erotic comedy.

Hi Nat,
I should also be interested in how to acquire Crowd Funding for SHORT FILM. I have written 5 scripts for this genre so far and am interested in any potential sources for funding to progress to production. Nicholas.Prosser@gmail.com

Hi Nat,

I'm the founder of Greenlit, an entirely new crowdfunding platform dedicated to film, based here in the UK, and set to launch in March. Obviously I'm biased, but your choice of platform is a much less significant factor than you might think. It's a common misconception that all you need to do for a successful raise is to chuck up a page and watch the money roll in from all the passing traffic on your provider's site. In reality, your success or otherwise depends on the effectiveness of, and the amount of effort you put into, promoting your campaign. Kickstarter has suggested that typically less than 5% of pledges come via people just browsing the site and stumbling across projects. Short takeaway - it's going to be an awful lot of work.

It's also the case that the larger the site, the less significant your project will be to them. They work on a numbers basis, where the volume of films coming through is more important than the success or failure of any one campaign. Now, no disrespect to the venerable Kickstarter (with whom SP has a partnership), but this is where I saw the opportunity for a new platform; one that specialises in film and in the UK, and works closely with a smaller number of producers to try and maximise the chances of success.

There are some more details on out site at https://greenlit.fund. More particularly, if you want advice on how to organise a campaign, and indeed on whether crowdfunding is right for your projects, I'm running a two-part masterclass, next one starts on Feb 6th at City University in London. Full details on the site at https://greenlit.fund/crowdfunding-masterclass. Use the code SHOOTERS50 for 50% off. There are a few people from the SP community took the last one who were really appreciative, and I hope they pop up here to back up what I'm saying.

All the best, Pete.

There's a wealth of better, experienced based and free advice in the SP archives on this oft repeated question. Perhaps a new catagory in the archives might be of use?

Hi John, that's a great idea that we'll definitely look into. Thanks, Molly
