Which broadband providers (and video sharing services) have the fastest upload speeds?

10 years, 1 month ago - Vasco de Sousa

When we were making Dara Says, and I was sending out clips to the sound guy, it took forever to upload stuff. If I were sending video, it would take even longer.

Well, uploading a full length HD video to Vimeo seems to take forever and a day. I know there are other options like dropbox and proxies, but to get your video there can take forever.

And, if you're sharing on dropbox, google drive, or whatever, it seems... to take forever.

But then I thought about it, maybe it's the Internet service provider. They'll guarantee their download speed, but not their upload speed. Maybe I need a new Internet service provider.

I looked at Plusnet, Virgin, BT, Sky, Talktalk, etc, and tried to figure out what their actual upload speeds are, especially when connecting to video and sharing services. Then I thought, maybe some of you have tried a few, and can compare them.

What are the fibre speeds for Virgin? What's the fastest upload speed you can get with something like Dropbox, google drive, Skydrive/onedrive, tresorit, box, vimeo, dailymotion, etc?

I'm specifically looking for upload speeds, not download. Although download can be annoying sometimes, it's usually adequate. Upload, however, is irritatingly slow.

Speed will vary with provider to a degree, but more with your distance from the exchange. Most providers just bundle BT Openreach wholesale broadband, so you get a different bill for the same service (like switching gas suppliers doesn't mean a new gas main and pipe to your house either).

The A in ADSL stands for Asymmetric. This refers to the fact that upload speed is compromised to the benefit of download speeds (indeed the up line usually only carries fairly modest HTTP requests!). If you need more up speed, something like ISDN might be better as it's symmetrical as I recall. That said, it's old technology and expensive.

Talk to BUSINESS broadband providers if you're looking for lower contention or better up speeds. It's a business need, and most business broadband packages have better support for things like this. Just be conscious of contract lengths and termination conditions.

http://business.bt.com/broadband-and-internet/ for instance - if you go to BT's fibre package, you get up to 19x the upload speeds.

Or if it's a really big deal, leased line, 10Gbps in either direction, but £170/month!
