Good to hear from you. How did you prove you were a media professional to get the funding for the events you have been to in the past? Was there specific requirements for that funding?
There seems to be a lot happening in Wales, are you based there?

A lot of them aren't listed yet. There are two film festivals in Aberystwyth that are normally pretty good, and I'm hoping to have time to attend at least a few screenings of each.
As far as free, I don't know any that are officially free, but industry professionals can get funding and so they are effectively free. And, there's often a free event or two.
I've been to a few "expensive" events in the past and had some funding body or other pay for my stay and my entrance fees (so it was free for attendees after proving that we are a media professionals, and most other people wouldn't really want to show up anyway. But the costs were acknowledged in an official price, so attendees acknowledged and appreciated the expenses involved.)
The Media Desk is one place to find more information on events and funding, closer to the time of the events. (Many aren't listed at the moment.) If you narrow it down more (horror, documentary, short films, features, screenwriting, special effects, or a certain local area) then it might be easier to find these events. http://www.mediadeskuk.eu/
There have been free events in the past at the WOW (Wales One World) film festival here and we even had Chuan Lu in Lampeter talk about his films. (He seemed nothing like his IMDB page.) I missed Gremlins last year at Abertoir, so I'll take a closer look at the programming this year.
