INDEXWhy is it that some members are allowed to make repeated posts on SP and others are not?

I've tried to get one of my posts repeated and I've been ignored by the moderators.

In what sense? I've never had a repeated post, for instance, and I've been here for years?

I was reluctant to mention specific cases, but to prove my point... the post 'I am looking for films to sound design, hit me!' was up on the 16th, 17th & 20th of this month. Is there a reason for this that I'm not aware of?

Perhaps you are seeing what happens when someone responds to a post - it bumps it up to the top.

@Alwynne. Doesn't explain why the same job post is featured on the filmmakers bulletin 3 times within a 7 day period and my repeat job post is ignored. Let's see if this post makes the next bulletin.

Hi Davina.
How do you mean? Do you mean a job role posted in the production area of the site, or a forum thread in Ask & Discuss reappearing in the bulletins?
We don't post the same posts through multiple times, but we frequently repost the same threads through when something new or interesting has been added. We'll just include that new post though, as to encourage others to join below.

Hi Matt
It seems to me that some members of SP are allowed to post for jobs in the Community section while others have to post in the Get People section. One of these job posts in the Community section then appeared in the Filmmakers bulletin and was repeatedly posted to the bulletin by the moderator.
The post I'm referring to is: 'I am looking for films to sound design, hit me!' appeared in the Filmmakers bulletin on the 16th, 17th & 20th of this month and also appears in the Community section.
What I want to know is what are the rules for job posts and if multiple job posts are allowed then why was my attempt to make a repeat post ignored by the moderator?
Kind regards
Davina

Oddly enough I tried to make a posting - about a guy in India trying to make contacts - and it has never appeared. Declined for some reason?

@Franz. If something is declined then you should be offered an explanation. SP is supposedly for the people. So, let's just wait and see what Matt and Xenia have to say, I understand they are the ones who run the Filmmakers bulletin.

Hi Franz,
If your post is not allowed through, you'll get a message explaining why it was unsuitable, or with instructions about what to change for it to go through. I'm not sure about that specific post, but if you was deleted, you would have received a notification saying so, with a message from us. I'll see if I can find that specific post in case something went wrong?
Davina, regarding your question, all members can post jobs into the Cast & Crew (jobs) section of the site, no hierarchies of membership. If jobs are posted into Ask & Discuss (community), we try to redirect them into the Cast & Crew section, which also go out through the bulletins.
In the instance your referring to above, that's not a specific job listing (e.g. zombie flick looking for a makeup specialist), but a general discussion topic / call for collaboration - someone introducing themselves as a sound designer and seeing where they could be useful and talking about related issues, so it's in Ask & Discuss. It'll have come through the bulletins multiple times as people will have responded to the discussion.
That make sense?

Hi Matt
So, if you're looking for collaboration the rules apply differently than if you're offering collaboration? Is this your argument?
Does this make sense to you?
Cheers

@James. To summarize: the issue is basically that people seeking collaboration are treated differently to people offering collaboration.
The longer version: So, a person offering his services as a sound designer can post in the Community section and even get their post to appear in the Filmmakers bulletin three times within seven days - while a person looking for a sound designer can only post in the Get People section and does not get to repeat their post. Just to mention - there is a Get Work section so anyone looking for work can presumably post in there.
As for new members introducing themselves - again that's only allowed if you're a new member who's looking for projects. A new member like me who's looking for collaborators is relegated to the back pages. Does this make sense?
A bit of a storm in a teacup?
So, if we're splitting the membership into those looking for opportunity and those offering opportunity - this the model for some other forums - then let's be specific about it.

Am I the only person who thinks it's the people seeking collaborators for their projects who actually justify the continued existence of SP? I'm sorry to say this, but without us SP could easily devolve into a Facebook group.

Hey Davina,
SP is more than just a crewing and casting site. It grew from mailing lists at a time when the web was in its infancy and nothing else existed. Now it's a bit of a hybrid, with the advantage that the bulletins are a good way to catch up if you're on set and don't have internet access so much. They're probably a little vestigial, but that's the context in which they exist.
There's an editorial line between "I'm an X, looking to help out on your project" and "I want people to help out on my project", and by and large the SP guys seem to manage it pretty well. The posts to the site are served out to the bulletins it appears where something may be of interest. It's an imprecise science for sure. There's no victimisation or favouritism at play, just people trying to serve the widest interests of their members.
There's also a lot of value if you dig through some previous "Discuss" and "Ask" threads.
When people are seeking specific roles, they're posted under the "get work/get people" area, and are easily scanned and read, as well as going out in the bulletins. As people look at these when they want work, or are offering it, it makes sense not to push the same listings day after day in the bulletins. If you've something to offer or discuss then whilst a conversation is active, the SP team post selected updates to the bulletins.. Itay not be ideal, it may not be to your taste, but it functions well enough by and large. I've been kicking around here since the late 90's as far as I can remember. I've learnt a lot and hopefully I've been able to help other members in turn.

Hi Paddy
SP seems to work well for long term members such as yourself but is turning into a bit of a sour deal for a person like me who takes out a one month membership to find 2 collaborators for a project and is only entitled to a single mention in the bulletin over the entire month. Am I the only one who thinks this is unfair - to say the least?

Semi-relevant - just tried to find Davina's bulletin post using the search bulletin facility on this site and it doesn't seem to work. Doesn't seem to work at all. I searched for a variety of words and phrases I know for sure have appeared in bulletins, but got nothing.

Hi Davina. If you think I'm in any way in league with Matt, you're mistaken. I've no horse in this race, I was just trying to help you with a little context. No need to get snarky at me.

Hi Alwynne
Thanks for asking. My post apppeared on the bulletin last week and is now consigned to the back pages - meaning, the Get People section and then do a search for those looking for sound designers in the UK. For this I unwittingly took out a month's membership.
I also, posted yesterday on the Ask page but I actually joined to post to the bulletin and definitely expected it to appear more than once. But hey, it's golden rules time.
Cheers

I didn't ask anything, Davina. I merely pointed out that the Search Bulletin facility on this site was duff. Perhaps the moderators could look into that.
