Join us for a creative day of brainstorms and writing exercises. Leave with the outline of your very first movie script.

If you’ve dreamed about being a screenwriter but have no idea how to start; if you work in film or TV as anything other than a writer and wondered how scripts are written; or if you need a refresher course because you’re stuck mid-screenplay - this packed workshop is for you.

Working in pairs and small groups, we’ll cover:

The idea: how to generate a wealth of ideas, then select the best. You’ll think up great plots for your own movie;

Writing cinematically: how to think epic and use images to carry your narrative. You’ll write your first image-led sequence;

Dialogue: how to write spoken words with the impact and economy of poetry. You learn to write from character;

Plot: how to think up great twists and use them to make your story more gripping;

The screenplay: what does it look like? How is it formatted? You’ll write your first opening scene.

During the weekend you'll also learn some screenwriting jargon. For example:

- What's a Goal, Arc, Treatment, Premise? What is a ‘story’?

- What is 'Three-Act Structure'?

- What does 'Expertise' bring to a film?

- How do relationships between characters make or break stories?

Intensive, fun and 100% hands-on, learn to respect the craft of screenwriting and have a go yourself.

How to Write the Romance-Drama Screenplay

As Jane Austin and the Brontës knew only too well, love stories sell – big time.

But as any Mills & Boon writer will tell you, writing a great love story isn’t as easy as you’d think.

The journey from ‘They meet’ to ‘They live happily ever after’ can be a rocky road littered with clichéd dialogue, pointless plots and one-dimensional characters.

However, if you get it right, there’s a vast market for great romance dramas, especially in ‘made-for-TV’ so if you want to sell a screenplay, there’s no better genre to try.

This is a 100% hands-on workshop. You’ll be brainstorming and writing in small groups all day as we tease out the characters and story beats to find out what works.

If you’ve never written a romance drama screenplay before, come along and have some fun with other writers.

Fenella makes TV trailers for a living. After spending six months cutting Romance Drama movie promos, she decided to write one herself. It was optioned immediately by Lighthouse Pictures in Canada.

Working with Distributors: The Benefits and Pitfalls
In this talk, Michael Pentney will discuss how he distributed Once More for Bobby (2014) which was first released on Sky and later on Amazon. Michael will discuss his journey of acquiring and working with a distributor, providing valuable insight into how the distribution industry works and what to look out for.

Routes to Successful Releases: From Traditional Theatrical to Drive-in Premieres
In this talk, Dean Fischer will discuss how he acquired a theatrical release for The Bromley Boys (2018) as well as how he negotiated a wider multi-territory release through a variety of distributors. The talk will provide practical advice for working with multiple distributors around the world.

Dean will also discuss the unique distribution of Break (2020) which became the first UK move to premiere via drive-in. He’ll portray the importance of creating a media buzz around your film to maximise the film’s exposure when working with a limited marketing budget.

Curtis Brown Creative’s eighteen-week Writing an Original TV Drama Serial course returns to London this October. Featuring masterclasses from top TV professionals and Curtis Brown agents. Scholarship place available.

COURSE DETAILS:

The course is led by celebrated screenwriter, director and producer Jamie Nuttgens and runs from 10 Oct 2022 to 27 Feb 2023

15 students will join the group with the aim of taking their screenwriting to the next level. The students will get focused feedback during one-to-one tutorials with Jamie and experienced Script Editor Clare Alan.

They will attend five masterclasses from leading industry figures – a showrunner, producer, script editor, commissioner and director will take students through the key stages of drama development and the production process.

Students will also get the chance to workshop their pilot episode, practice pitching and network with top TV agents from Curtis Brown.

Applicants are invited to send in the opening of their pilot script, 300 words synopsising the rest of the pilot episode and 300 words synopsising the rest of the serial and fill out the application form online.

Course fee: £2,800 (inc VAT).

This training is probably of most benefit for those wanting to improve their shooting skills for TV and documentary (such as APs, researchers, self-shooters), and those wanting to get to grip with new cameras, improve their interview lighting skills and learn to shoot sequences for TV, corporates and branded content.

I've taught APs and researchers how to shoot for primetime programmes Escape to the Country and Grand Designs. I've led filmmaking workshops with young people for the BBC and National Youth Film Academy, and In 2010 I spent a month teaching filmmaking in Kabul, Afghanistan. I've even taught DSLR basics to Shooting People staff!

Please note - I don't own equipment of my own. So, we'd be relying on using your own kit, or perhaps that of your production company employer. Alternatively, beg and borrow from friends! Or, we can simply hire-in from a rental house.

If you're wanting to get to grips with your camera, learn how to light for interviews, or want some hands-on experience with equipment you're going to be shooting with in the near future, I can design a short course to help you get your head round things.

I make it a priority to demystify the technical side of cameras and create shooting habits that make your life easier. In that way, the decisions you have to make on the day you shoot are more focussed on storytelling than colour balance.

I'm experienced with all cameras across the board, including the Sony FS7, A7S, FX6, FX9 and Canon C300.

If you'd like to discuss possibilities - on cameras large or small - just drop me a line. I am based in Manchester but often work in London. Training would take place at your home, production company or other suitable location you have access to.
