INDEXAnyone entered / involved in the "48filmproject" who can justify the $150 entry fee?

Everyone one loves a good 48 hour, 28 day, 10 second or whatever film competition. Lovely little challenges. And it's nice when someone else organises the logistics for you and all that. But is there really any way to justify a $150 submission fee from the gang at www.48filmproject.com (or even the "special voucher" rate of 'only' ¢105). I mean I realise they need to cover the big prize fund they're offering but is that reasonable? Answers on the back of a tax return...

I entered this, in London, a few years ago. I had to join a waiting list as they restrict the entry to first come first served. I got one of the only 90 places and got our film screened with 30 others in The Prince Charles in Leicester Square. There were 3 shows in 3 succeeding nights. All the completed films were shown. Even the ones that missed the deadline. I was very happy indeed. There was a big crowd and I felt very 'Hollywood' I also paid ( much more) for a small after party at the Cork&Bottle. Your choice, I felt it was well worth while. http://vimeo.com/29947084
This was our entry.

I don't know this festival/competition specifically but I could see the overheads of hiring an exhibition space, ushers, etc could add up. Especially if they're not covered by a sponsor.

That's right, Paddy. The venues for the 48 hour film project are real theaters. I've been to some festival screenings here that are in a concrete room with bad projection and worse sound! And if the screening is at a studio, you've got to pay the security bill, which is in the thousands of dollars.

I live in L.A., so I've known a few that have participated over the years. Yes, $150 is a lot. But think of it this way: as long as you finish on time, your film WILL be in competition. How many festivals have you paid money to, only to be rejected? And how many of those festivals paid a 48,000 dollar prize to make a feature? How many festivals give out best acting or cinematography prizes for a short? Since the entire crew, pretty much, has a chance for some notice, it's pretty easy to get a 15 person cast and crew to toss in 10 bucks each.

I think it's expensive too. There are other festivals with big prizes that have much lower entry fees, some are even free to enter. And shooting a feature for 48k isn't exactly great, I've seen (free to enter) festivals that give the same prize to make a short.
